Disheartened after a fight with Bakugou, Kaminari wanders into a mirror maze where he encounters a not so friendly face.

Notes:

For context; this is a chapter from a currently unpublished work. That’s why some things may seem a little out of context or like they don’t line up. Just keep that in mind while reading.

In this story, the training camp never happens. This event replaces it.

Work Text:

With the intention of giving his students a day of recreation, Aizawa organized a class field trip to the amusement park. His husband had agreed to help chaperone the twenty students. Aizawa organized it so each student had a buddy they would be with the whole day. Whether it was a smart or foolish choice, Aizawa let them choose their own partners. As soon as the class arrived at the park, they began splitting into pairs.

“Hey Mina! You wanna be my buddy?” Kaminari asked his pink haired friend.

“Sorry hun, I’m planning on spending the day with Ochako.”

“Don’t sweat it! I’ll just keep asking around.” And that’s exactly what he did. It turns out, every student except for Denki and three others had picked out partners on the bus ride to the park. Maybe sleeping the whole bus ride wasn’t the best idea…

The other three who hadn’t picked partners were Midoriya, Bakugou, and Jirou. Denki turned to his purple haired crush and opened his mouth to speak.

“Hey Jirou, do you wanna-“

“Nope!” Bakugou interjected.

“What do you mean no?” Denki whined.

“If you go with earphones, then that leaves me stuck with Deku.” The ash blonde said the word as if it were poison.

“Okay then…”

“Jirou! Do you wanna be my partner?” Midoriya asked the girl. Denki didn’t like the way he phrased it…

“Sure!”

Denki watched with a frown as the two walked off.

The blonde duo sat at a table, eating the food they purchased. Bakugou mindlessly scrolled through his phone while Denki stared off into the distance, looking at the Ferris wheel. He could vaguely see the figures of Jirou and Midoriya on the ride. They looked like they were laughing and having fun.

“You’re an idiot, y’know that, right?” Bakugou’s voice drew Denki’s attention away from the Ferris wheel.

“Hm?” The shorter blonde hummed.

“You’re a useless, pining, idiot.”

“Is it that obvious?” He asked as a blush rose to his cheeks.

“Painfully.”

Denki sighed and looked back at the Ferris wheel. He never expected that Jirou and Midoriya would get along so well. They were totally different and had very few common interests. It just didn’t make sense to Denki.

“Do you think she likes him?” Denki found himself asking.

“Yup.” Bakugou said nonchalantly, still looking at his phone.

“Really?” Denki asked, hoping the other blonde was joking.

“Oh yeah.” He was starting to sound agitated.

“What makes you say that?”

“Well obviously they’re getting along pretty well right now. She also didn’t protest at getting paired with Deku, though I don’t know why. And the saying ‘opposites attract’ exists for a reason.” Each word that came out of Bakugou’s mouth disheartened the younger blonde. Though it wasn’t exactly concrete evidence, it was enough to convince Denki.

“You really think so?”

“Yes.” He was annoyed this time.

“…Do you think I’d ever have a chance with her?”

Bakugou finally looked up from his phone. He was pissed. Instead of responding, he rolled his eyes and looked back at his phone.

“What’s up with you? You’re more pissy than normal.” Denki pushed

“What’s wrong with me is that I’m stuck with you!” Bakugou snapped. Denki was taken aback.

“If I’m annoying you so much, then why don’t you go!” Denki foolishly yelled in the heat of the argument, disregarding Aizawa’s earlier instructions to not split up.

“Y’know what? That’s the first smart idea you’ve had since I’ve known you!”

“Fine! Then go!” Bakugou merely snarled in response, and then walked away.

Denki found himself crying in the empty mirror maze.

“You okay there kid?” A gravelly voice called from behind him.

Correction. Denki was in the nearly empty mirror maze.

“Yeah, I just… I just had a fight with my friend. And it was over something so stupid too! I just got worked up and told him to go away.” Denki confessed to the stranger.

“So you’re all alone in here?” Denki turned around to face the stranger. He was wearing a black jacket that zipped up high and covered half his face. The hood was over his head, and a pair of sunglasses covered his eyes. The only defining trait Denki could make out of the man was that he was pretty tall. Much taller than him, that’s for sure.

“Yeah…” Denki looked up at the man.

“Walk with me.” Before giving Denki the chance to respond, he placed a firm hand on Denki’s shoulder, forcing him to follow. Alarm bells began to ring in Denki’s head. Something about this man wasn’t right.

“I should get back to my friend.” Denki stopped in his tracks, halting the man as well.

“Now why would you want to do that, Kaminari?”

All the color drained from Denki’s face.

“How did you-“

“I know who you are, Kaminari. I know who all of you UA brats are.” If the man was associating Denki with UA… he must have been a villain!

Denki shoved the man away from him and activated his quirk as a warning. The man in question reached up to his head and removed his jacket and glasses. Standing there was a man with ratty black hair and piercing blue eyes.

The most distinct thing about him though was his skin. He was covered—head to toe, it seemed—in nasty, purple burns. His skin was being held together by staples, it was awful.

“How terribly impolite of me! Let me introduce myself. You can call me Dabi. I’m here on behalf of the League of Villains.”

Bakugou trudged back to the bus rendezvous point, where most of his classmates were already waiting. A few minutes later, everyone else arrived. Well… almost everyone. Aizawa was doing a headcount, but only counted nineteen students,

“Kaminari? Does anyone know where Kaminari is?” The teacher called out.

“He was your partner, wasn’t he Kacchan? Midoriya asked innocently. He did his best to ignore his and Jirou’s intertwined hands.

“Shut the hell up, Deku!” Bakugou barked. His outburst earned the attention of all the students and both the teachers.

“Bakugou, do you know where he is?” Yamada questioned. Bakugou simply huffed in response.

“What. Happened.” Aizawa aggressively demanded.

“We just got into a lame fight and then he stormed off. I don’t know where he went, or where he is.” The blonde confessed. Aizawa sighed before turning to his husband.

“I’m going to go look for him. You stay here in case he comes back. Make sure none of them leave.” He gestured to the class. “And you.” He pointed to Bakugou. “You and I are going to have a talk when this is over.” Aizawa left the group in search of his missing student.

Denki yelped out in pain as Dabi dragged him by his already twisted ankle. Ever since the man revealed himself, Denki had tried to escape the mirror maze with no avail. Every twist and turn left him more lost than before. There was no service in the maze, resulting in no way to contact his teachers or classmates.

Dabi’s fingernails scratched the exposed skin of his ankle and he dragged him along the floor. Dabi activated his quirk, burning Denki’s flesh. He reached down and grabbed Denki by the throat. He tried to activate his quirk again, but it didn’t work this time. All the mirrors surrounding them contained the reflection of Aizawa.

Dabi dropped the blonde from his grasp and looked down at him. A crazed smile spread across his face as he spoke.

“Looks like I gotta go now. This won’t be the last time we meet, Kaminari.” The man took off in a sprint, navigating the maze like an expert. Aizawa ran to his student and helped him to his feet…foot.  With an arm slung over Aizawa’s shoulder, Denki was able to hobble out of the maze.

When the two arrived at the rendezvous point, Aizawa sat Denki down on a bench next to Bakugou and went to talk to his husband. In the time that he was gone, the bus had shown up. Yamada loaded all the students on except for the two blondes. Aizawa instructed Yamada to fetch an ice pack for Denki. Aizawa walked over to the bench where the two students were sitting and glared down at them.

“What the hell were the two of you thinking?” He asked quietly. Quiet anger was much scarier than loud anger.

“It was my fault, sir. I pushed Bakugou over the edge and then got angry at him for snapping. I was the one who suggested splitting up.” Denki confessed.

“That doesn’t change the fact that both of you acted irresponsibly and recklessly. Bakugou, one week after school detention. Kaminari, you get eight days. Got it?”

“Yes sir.” Both responded in unison.

“Good. Now get on the bus. Kaminari, the police are going to meet us at UA to question you.” The two did as they were told and boarded the bus. Being that there were only two seats left, the two sat next to each other.

Yamada walked down the aisle and handed Denki an ice pack for his ankle. After Yamada returned to his seat, the bus took off. Denki gently placed the ice on his ankle, wincing as it brushed across the burnt flesh. He sat back up in his seat, and did something he should have done a while ago.

“Hey, I’m sorry. It was a stupid thing to start a fight over.”

“Yeah, yeah, whatever. How’d you hurt your leg?” Bakugou was clearly avoiding the subject, but Denki decided to humor him.

“Got attacked by some crazy dude in the mirror maze. If Aizawa hadn’t shown up when he did… he would have killed me.” As Denki dwelt in the gravity of the situation he had just escaped, Bakugou tried to piece his words together.

“Look… I’m- if you tell anyone I’m saying this, I will kill you. But I’m… I’m sorry too, I guess.” Denki heard him, but decided to mess with Bakugou a bit.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t hear that last part. Can you say it a little louder?” He asked with a devious smirk. Bakugou scoffed and rolled his eyes.

“I’m sorry.” He said a little louder.

“What was that?” Denki teased.

“I said I’m sorry, you dipshit!” Bakugou practically screamed, earning him a few strange looks. Denki burst out cackling. After a moment, Bakugou rolled his eyes and leaned back into his seat.

“Are we good now?” He asked.

“Yeah, yeah we’re good. But can I ask you a question? You don’t have to answer it if you don’t want to.”

“Shoot.”

“Why did you get so upset earlier? I know I’m annoying sometimes, but there’s no way I’m that annoying.” There was a long pause before Bakugou responded.

“Them.” He glanced in the direction of Midoriya and Jirou. Denki followed his gaze and felt confused.

“Do you like Jirou too?” He asked while turning back to Bakugou.

“No.”

He placed his hands in his lap and looked down at them. It was so out of character. Bakugou looked almost… shy? Embarrassed maybe… oh. Oh.

“You like Midoriya.” Denki whispered. Bakugou looked up with wide eyes and rosy cheeks. “But wait, I thought you hated Mido-mmmm!” Bakugou slapped a hand over Denki’s mouth to keep him from yapping.

“Yes, I like him! I’ll tell you about it later, but can we please talk about something else?” When Denki nodded, Bakugou removed his hand from Denki’s mouth.

The two settled into an easy conversation. As the bus rumbled along, the two friends joked around. Thoughts of their earlier fight or the new villain on the loose were long forgotten…

 If only temporarily.
