The Perfect Fit

Summary:

Jungkook visits his family in his small hometown one more time before he goes on tour. He’s used to the hustle and bustle of his life as an idol. What he’s not used to is someone who’s actually willing to stick around through it all.

Notes:

First thank you goes to my lovely commissioner. Your excitement throughout my writing process has been part of what kept me going. Thank you for your faith in me to complete this, even as a very slow writer.

Second thank you goes to the worlds best beta and friend, as always, your encouragement and willingness to grammar check my stuff is this biggest help <3

** note: this may be a bit confusing, as I don’t go into much detail about Yoongi’s job, but the way I picture it in my head is that he has a brick and mortar shop in which he collects furniture/decor pieces from independent creators and sells them along with being hired to design people’s places for them. Hope that makes sense lol Also, even though Jungkook is from Busan, I imagine him from a smaller district within

Work Text:

Jungkook hasn’t been home in such a long time. With recording music, promotions, music video taping, and dance practices, it doesn’t leave much time for him to visit home. He knows that he has to visit now or it’s going to be almost a full year before he can see his family again since his world tour is coming up. He loves his family too much to not see them at least once before he’s traveling all over the world.

He opted to take his own car back to his hometown in Busan. He figured that if he was in a company car it might bring more attention to him than he wants as he drives through his comparatively small hometown. As “nondescript” as the cars are supposed to be, everyone knows that famous people get driven around in big black SUVs with tinted windows. He felt like it was smarter to just take his own car sans security and any other markers of his idol life.

He loves coming home. He loves the smell of the salt water coming off of the sea. He loves all of the small markets and the hard working people that sell local meat, fish, and produce. Most importantly, he loves that it means getting to see the people that mean the most to him.

He’s actually surprising his family by coming in the night before he was supposed to arrive. There’s a small chance they may be busy, but he hopes that he’ll get to see the shock on their faces as he walks through the front door unannounced.

Jungkook pulls up to their home and parks his car as quietly as he can so as not to let on that someone is at their house that they’re not expecting. He leaves his belongings in his car for the time being, he’ll come back for them later. He takes out his keys, and locates the familiar and worn down house key that’s been there for years. Within a few seconds he’s unlocked the door and is crossing the threshold to his home.

“Junghyun-ah? Is that you? You’re back early!” he hears his mom yell from some other room in their home.

He opts not to say anything so as not to ruin the surprise. He kicks off his shoes and puts on some house slippers before heading deeper into his childhood home. No one is in either of the common areas of the home so he heads toward where he knows the bedrooms are.

Just as he rounds the corner he runs onto his mother who is coming down the hallway.

“Ah! Oh my gosh! Jeon Jungkook, what are you doing here so early! You scared the life out of me,” she says with an exasperated breath, one hand on the wall to support her.

Jungkook laughs lightly at her reaction, which was exactly what he was hoping for.

“Jungkookie is here?” He hears his dad shout, likely from inside their bedroom. About 30 seconds later and he’s in the hallway too. “You’re not supposed to be here until tomorrow morning!” He says as he pulls Jungkook into a bear hug.

“He just about gave me a heart attack. I knew I heard someone come in but you didn’t answer so I thought you were an intruder,” she now reaches to hug Jungkook, too.

“I know, I wanted it to be a surprise. Didn’t want to ruin it,” he explains as he takes in the familiar and comforting scent of his mom before she pulls away.

She makes a disapproving noise but insists that he follow her into the kitchen so that they can have a midnight snack together before they all go off to their separate rooms to sleep.

Just as they get to the kitchen, Jungkook hears the front door open up. He knows it’s his brother without having to turn to see him. What he doesn’t know is who the other person is that must be with him – he doesn’t recognize the deep voice.

Jungkook starts making his way toward their entryway to greet his brother, and isn’t prepared to see possibly one of the most beautiful men he’s ever laid eyes on. Jungkook was pretty sure he knew most of his brother’s friends, but this is one he’s never met before.

“Jungkook-ah! What are you doing here?” His brother asks, clearly surprised as he pulls him in for a hug and ruffles his hair.

Jungkook pouts, but can’t hide the happiness in his voice when he responds. “I thought I’d come a little early. Who, uh- who’s your friend?” Jungkook’s eyes flicker from his brother to the friend that has yet to be introduced to him.

“Oh, sorry hyung. Jungkook, this is Yoongi-hyung. He’s my new neighbor,” his brother tries to explain. Jungkook is still a little confused because he’s had a ton of neighbors before but never became close enough with any of them to go out with them.

“Ah, yeah, I’m new to town and I’ve frequently needed to ask your brother for help. He just showed me his favorite barbecue place,” Yoongi explains a little better.

“The one two streets down near the convenience store?” Jungkook asks because he’s pretty sure he knows the place and he’s going to be so upset he missed out on it.

His brother nods, “That’s the one.”

“Without me? You know that’s my favorite place,” he whines.

His brother laughs before holding up his hand which is carrying what he presumes to be leftovers. “Relax, you can have some of this. Let’s go sit.”

Jungkook and his family sit and eat, catching up on everything that’s happened recently. Jungkook also gets to know a little bit more about Yoongi. He’s two years older than his brother. He’s originally from Daegu which would explain the slight accent he has that Jungkook can’t stop fixating on. He runs his own interior design shop and is really passionate about light fixtures apparently.

And, he’s single.

One of the last things Jungkook makes note of after Yoongi leaves for the evening is how normal everything felt. Usually when he meets new people they immediately start to ask him questions about his life as an idol. He doesn’t mind it so much, but sometimes he just wants to be treated like a normal person. That’s exactly how Yoongi made him feel tonight.

Jungkook’s only here for a week, which doesn’t leave him a lot of time to get to know someone or lay any sort of groundwork really, but he knows that this is just part of his lifestyle unfortunately. Doesn’t mean he can’t at least have fun while he’s here. He wouldn’t be mad if he got to see Yoongi more.

Before heading to his room for the night he stops by his brother’s old room. He knocks lightly on the door before cracking it open and poking his head in. He sees his brother sitting on his bed, writing in a journal, and decides to walk in.

“I already know what you’re here for,” his brother accuses.

Jungkook feigns annoyance, “You act like I can’t just come spend time with you just for the sake of spending time with you.”

His brother looks at him pointedly. This has Jungkook rolling his eyes because of course his brother knows what he’s up to. They’ve only known each other for their entire lives.

“Okay, so he’s, like, probably the prettiest man I’ve ever had the pleasure to meet,” Jungkook concedes.

Junghyun laughs, “You’re an idol. Surely you’ve met people more attractive than Yoongi-hyung.”

Jungkook scoffs in response, “You’re blind if you don’t think he was basically handcrafted by God himself. Have you seen his hair?”

Jungkook flops back onto his brother’s bed dramatically. He lets out a heavy breath and allows himself to fantasize, just for a moment, what it would be like to run his hands through Yoongi’s dark wavy hair.

“Damn, you’ve got it bad,” his brother teases. “But I don’t blame you. Yoongi probably is one of the more attractive guys in this tiny town.”

“Do you know if he’s into guys?” Jungkook cuts right to the chase.

“I haven’t gotten to know that part of him yet, but he’s pretty open minded about a lot of other things. You should just try flirting with him and see what happens.”

“Okay, but he’s your friend. Which means you have to be the one to bring him around again.”

“Fine, but figure out a way to get his number quickly. He’ll start to think I’m the one who’s into him if I ask him to come over every day for a week straight.”

“Challenge accepted!” Jungkook declares as he hops off the bed and leaves to make his way toward his own room. “Thanks, by the way. I’ve missed you, hyung.”

His brother gives him a smile, “I’ve missed you too, Kook-ah.”

Jungkook goes to bed that night with excitement brewing inside of him. He’s still not sure what all he’ll get out of this week, besides spending much needed time with his family, but he has a feeling it’ll be good.

__

Jungkook wakes up early the next morning to go for a jog. He feels a bit antsy about the upcoming tour and wants to clear his mind a bit. He’s supposed to spend the day with his family down by the beach and he doesn’t want his cluttered mind to put a damper on the short time he’ll have with all of them.

Toward the end of his run, he decides to stop by a coffee shop. He figures it might be nice for him to bring some back to his parents and brother as they’ll likely just be waking up when he returns. He walks into the store and walks right up to the barista waiting at the register. He doesn’t really worry about wearing a mask or hiding his identity this early in the morning, as there typically aren’t as many people out and about, and the ones that are don’t tend to cause too much trouble.

He orders some coffee and tea for his family, and finds a chair to sit in while he waits for the order. Just as his name is called, another person walks into the quiet coffee shop. Jungkook doesn’t pay them much attention until he hears them address him – the deep voice sounding familiar.

“Jungkook-ssi? Junghyun’s brother, right?”

Jungkook can’t help the smile that spreads across his face at the chance run-in with Yoongi.

“Hey, yeah! Good to see you, Yoongi-ssi,” Jungkook responds as he shifts on his feet awkwardly. As happy as he is, he has no idea what to do with himself. They don’t know each other well enough to hug, but a handshake or bow would feel too formal.

“Were you just working out?” Yoongi asks, gesturing to Jungkook’s appearance.

Now Jungkook feels even more awkward. He’s still sweaty and sticky from his run. His clothing is clinging to him in weird spots and he’s sure he doesn’t smell the best. Definitely not his best look, but he didn’t plan on seeing Yoongi or being in this coffee shop for more than 10 minutes.

Jungkook manages a laugh, “Yeah, sort of. I went for a run. I was just picking something up for everyone before I head back.”

Yoongi nods in understanding and if he’s put off by Jungkook’s stench, he doesn’t show it. “That’s nice of you. I usually come here in the mornings to get my head on straight before I head to work.”

“Do you work close to here?”

“Yeah, my shop is just a few doors down actually.”

“Oh, I’ll have to stop by sometime.”

“I know you’re not in town for long, but you should hit me up if you ever want to get coffee together or stop by my place,” Yoongi suggests as he hands over his phone to Jungkook.

Jungkook can’t tell if Yoongi is flirting with him or just being friendly, but he’s taking the good fortune for what it is. He puts his name and number into Yoongi’s phone and hands it back over. Within another 30 seconds his watch is vibrating on his wrist, indicating he’s gotten a text.

8:17am

[unknown number] It’s Yoongi :]

“Now you have mine too,” Yoongi says by way of explaining.

“Thanks,” Jungkook says back, trying really hard to contain another huge smile.

Yoongi makes his way up to the counter to put his order in, signaling the end of the conversation, but not before he turns to Jungkook and leaves him with one last thing. “Use it, or don’t, but I’d like it if you did.”

That was definitely flirting, Jungkook’s sure of it.

“I will, don’t worry, Yoongi-ssi.” He doesn’t bother containing the smile this time before he heads out the door.

__

Jungkook and his brother are standing in the shallow water of the beach when he decides to bring up the interaction he had with Yoong earlier that morning.

“I got his number,” he says smugly and without any context because he knows he won’t need it.

“How? Where did you even see him?” His brother asks, utter disbelief written all over his face.

Jungkook laughs, “I ran into him in the coffee shop I stopped at before coming home. He just gave me his number. Pretty sure he was flirting with me too.”

“God, it’s a good thing I like girls because I wouldn’t stand a chance in this town with my idol brother snatching everyone else up left and right.”

They both laugh at that. Jungkook hadn’t really thought of it in that way. He hasn’t dated anyone in a long time, but he gets what he’s saying. Just him being an idol puts his brother at a disadvantage in their small hometown despite the fact that he’d be a great partner for anyone, too.

“Whatever happened with Minsuk? I thought you really liked her?” Jungkook inquires.

“I guess we’re just at two different places. I’m kind of getting ready to settle down and she didn’t feel the same. It’s okay, though. It was for the best.”

Jungkook takes a moment to mull on what his brother had said. Being an idol makes it really difficult for Jungkook to even have thoughts of settling down. His life is fast paced. He’s always traveling or recording or dancing. Not to mention that some of the fans would go ballistic if they found out.

However, there’s a large part of Jungkook that would really want a long term partner. Someone he can bring on trips with him every now and then. Someone to come home to anytime he’s in South Korea. He craves that warmth that comes from being with someone that just feels so right.

He just doesn’t know how realistic that is and it scares him a little. Makes him not want to put too much effort into any connection he may feel with someone. He’s not a heartbreaker. He doesn’t want to hurt anyone in the process.

His brother must be reading his mind with what he asks next. “Think you’ll want to settle down anytime soon?”

Jungkook lets out a sigh, “I’d want to, but it seems unlikely with everything, you know?”

His brother nods and doesn’t say anything else for a minute, but then a smirk creeps onto his face. “I think Yoongi could convince you otherwise.”

“I just met him. I wouldn’t hold your breath with that one,” Jungkook warns.

“I don’t know. He’s older than you, so he’s got some maturity that would probably be helpful with your situation. He’s got his own business here so that keeps him pretty busy anyway. Maybe he’d be the perfect fit for you,” his brother suggests with a casual shrug.

Jungkook lets it sink in. He lets the idea of Yoongi – who, granted, he hardly knows – being a right fit for him sink deep in the recesses of his mind. That place where he doesn’t like to go too often because it never seemed attainable, so why bother.

“Maybe,” Jungkook says in a non-committal tone. He likes the idea of it, but the fact of the matter is that he doesn’t know Yoongi yet, so there really isn’t much to imagine.

“Well, you should hit him up. He didn’t give you his phone number for no reason. I practically had to pry it out of him after the third week of him knocking on my door for help with things at 8am. I couldn’t take it anymore, at least I can ignore a text for 30 minutes and not feel bad about it,” his brother laments.

His brother makes a good point. Yoongi had no reason to give his number to him unless he really wanted to. He obviously likes what he sees, at the very least, and maybe it could be a little more than just some fun while he’s in town.

Jungkook pulls his phone out of his pocket and opens up the text that Yoongi had sent earlier that morning.

3:17pm

[jungkook] hey, what time does your shop close up for the day?

3:24pm

[yoongi-ssi] 5pm. Why?

3:25pm

[jungkook] I was thinking of coming by and maybe we can grab a drink later? If you’re not busy?

3:30pm

[yoongi-ssi] I can make time :] Come by a little earlier and I can show you around the place.

3:32pm

[jungkook] okay, I’ll see you later ^^

“God, I’m scared for when you get to know him better,” Junghyun says to Jungkook.

“What are you talking about?” Jungkook asks, confusion written on his face.

His brother laughs and pushed his shoulder playfully, “You’re already looking at your phone like an idiot. Yoongi-hyung’s gonna have you whipped once you really get to know him.”

Jungkook puts on his biggest pout and moves to pick up a handful of sand. His brother is already running away from him when he shouts, “He’s going to be the one who’s whipped! Just you wait and see!”

__

Jungkook shows up to Yoongi’s shop 20 minutes before he’s supposed to close up. He showered and changed after he got home from the beach and he tried to pick out something that wouldn’t scream he was trying too hard despite the fact that he took a full 40 minutes deciding. That’s between him and his full length mirror.

He walks into the shop and the bell on the door jingles signaling his arrival to Yoongi and the last dregs of the customers in the shop. Yoongi spots him and gives him a full smile which Jungkook swears he hasn’t seen yet. He would know if he had because it has him stuck in one spot, unable to think properly enough to move one step in front of the other.

Since Jungkook isn’t moving or literally doing anything to seem remotely normal at this moment, Yoongi seems to decide to make his way to Jungkook instead of the opposite way around.

“Hey, you made it,” Yoongi says as he approaches Jungkook.

Jungkook shakes himself out of his reverie, “Yeah! Of course! This place is- wow! This is all yours?”

Yoongi nods as he looks around his interior design shop, “Yeah, I went to school for design and I saw a need for something like this here. It’s doing pretty well, I think.”

Jungkook can tell Yoongi takes pride in this place by the way he wears it on his face and carries himself as he walks around from display to display. It’s attractive to see someone so in their element like this – someone who has built their dream from the ground up.

He listens to Yoongi as he walks him around the store talking to him about different elements of the displays and products he carries. He has the shop organized so that different sections have different pieces from various design styles. There’s eclectic wooden pieces in the mid-century modern display, and light wood tones and creams in the contemporary display.

Despite not having much knowledge of interior design, Jungkook is utterly enthralled with everything coming out of Yoongi’s mouth. He’s listening acutely to every syllable that falls from Yoongi’s lips (which happen to be a very pretty dusty shade of pink, Jungkook notes).

That said, it doesn’t keep him from having slightly dirty thoughts when Yoongi starts talking about the tools he had to use to put together some of these pieces and to mount the sturdy shelving onto the wall. It’s hard for his mind not to head in that direction when words like drill, stud, mount, and wood are flowing out of his pretty, pretty mouth.

“Are you even listening anymore?” Yoongi asks. He doesn’t seems too upset as he lets out a soft laugh while he waits for Jungkook to respond.

Jungkook runs an awkward hand through his hair, “I’m sorry, my mind kind of derailed after you started talking about using a stud finder for the shelves.”

Yoongi nods his head knowingly, “It’s more horny than you thought it would be, isn’t it?” His voice comes out in a teasing drawl and Jungkook is pretty sure his brain starts to malfunction.

Yoongi starts laughing again, but not unkindly. He reaches out to give Jungkook’s arm a friendly squeeze, “Cute. It’s okay, I don’t blame you.” Jungkook’s mind is still reeling from the first touch Yoongi and him just shared when he continues on. “Let me just check out these last couple of customers and I’ll lock up for the night.”

It’s all Jungkook can do to smile and nod in agreement before Yoongi makes his way toward the two people waiting at the checkout counter. That was probably one of the most non-sexual horny conversations he’s ever had with someone, and he vaguely realizes he needs to start thinking about something else so that he can stop himself from chubbing up at the thought of testing out just how sturdy some of these display pieces really are.

Yoongi’s quick, just like he said he would be and within 10 minutes they’re headed toward a bar just outside of town that Jungkook always makes a point of visiting when he’s in the area. It’s one of his favorite places to go because it’s always packed and no one ever seems to care that he’s there. He can drink, dance, and have fun without having to worry about people invading him and other ways he usually worries about.

They sidle up to the bar first, both ordering a drink to help them ease into the night. Yoongi orders a whiskey neat and Jungkook gets an amber beer on draught. They sip on their drinks for a few minutes before attempting to dive into conversation again.

“So, what’s it like being an idol?” Yoongi asks, seeming to not want to hold anything back anymore by jumping right into that question.

Jungkook ponders for a minute, never really sure how to answer this question in a way that will appease people. He chooses honesty, “It’s a lot sometimes. I mean, I love what I do and I love my fans, but sometimes I just want to relax. Maybe the simplicity of what everyone else has.”

“Yeah, I get that. I’m sure there’s a lot of pressure put on you all the time – that can’t be easy. I’m sure it’s hard on your relationships too,” Yoongi says as he takes a sip of his whiskey.

Jungkook wonders if this is Yoongi’s way of assessing whether tonight is worth it. Whether any of this is worth it if Jungkook can’t maintain a relationship. He doesn’t blame Yoongi, though. Not everyone is built to be in a relationship with this type of lifestyle.

“I’ve had a few here and there, but nothing that really stuck. People tend to get tired of me always being on the go. I don’t really have the option to settle down right now unless I want to give up my career,” Jungkook explains.

Yoongi’s looking at him now, instead of out toward the crowd, and his eyes are full of understanding. There’s a kindness and non-judgmental quality flowing from him. Jungkook finds it comforting, like, maybe Yoongi does really get it.

He then, suddenly, breaks eye contact and sets his empty glass down before he grabs Jungkook’s hand. “Let’s go dance. No need to think about all of this tonight.”

Jungkook loves that Yoongi is trying to take his mind off of all of the difficult parts that come with being an idol. He loves that Yoongi just wants to have fun, dance, drink, and get to know each other a little, even if it’s just for tonight. And Jungkook would love to do the same.

They fall into an easy rhythm with each other, moving fluidly with the timing of the music. The bass is thumping all around them and the bar is starting to get more crowded as the night grows longer, but all Jungkook can focus on his how good it feels to have Yoongi’s hands on his hips and their bodies so close he can almost feel the heat radiating off of them.

Jungkook isn’t sure who leans in first, but there's only a split second before he feels Yoongi’s lips on his own and he realizes what’s happening. It takes his brain a second to catch up, but as soon as it does he’s reveling in the feel of Yoongi’s pouty lips on his own. Jungkook tilts his head to deepen the kiss and their lips slot together like little puzzle pieces – made for each other. Jungkook can’t remember the last time it felt this good to kiss someone.

Yoongi’s grip on his hips hasn’t waivered, except for the one hand he’s brought up to cradle the back of Jungkook’s head. Yoongi applies gentle pressure as if he wants to get even closer to Jungkook than he already is. Jungkook decides it’s safe to push it a little further and glides his tongue along the seam of Yoongi’s lips, just to test the waters. He opens up prettily, and Jungkook swears it hasn’t only been 45 seconds since they started with the way he feels all consumed by Yoongi right now.

Yoongi moans against Jungkook’s lips as their tongues lightly skate across each other. He tastes like spearmint and whiskey, but he’s an intoxicating flavor all on his own. After another 30 seconds or so of them exchanging heavy breaths and roaming hands they finally come up for air.

Jungkook’s practically panting when he thumbs the spit off the corner of his mouth. “Should we, um, maybe take this somewhere else?”

“Definitely,” Yoongi says with labored breath, like he’s just as affected. “I’ll take you to my place.”

They ordered a car, even though they both only had one drink, just to be on the safe side. Yoongi’s place isn’t too far, but Jungkook probably wouldn’t have noticed even if it was two hours away with the way his mind is racing of thoughts about what’s about to happen and what it all could mean for them afterwards. Yoongi grabs Jungkook’s hand and holds it for the last five minutes of the ride and it almost feels reassuring in a way, despite Yoongi not being able to read his mind to know that he needed it.

When they get to his place, it’s just as tidy and beautiful as Jungkook thought it would be. He’d expect nothing less from a clearly very talented interior designer. However, his thoughts aren’t able to linger on the plush velvet sofa or warm wood tones of the coffee table because Yoongi is leading him toward what Jungkook presumes is his bedroom.

Yoongi stops them before they fully reach his bed, “Just so you know, we don’t have to do anything you don’t want to do and this doesn’t need to mean anything you don’t want it to mean. Okay?”

That eases Jungkook’s mind more than Yoongi probably realizes. “Okay,” Jungkook says with a nod and begins to pull Yoongi closer to the bed now – desire in both of their eyes.

__

When Jungkook wakes up in Yoongi’s bed the next day, there’s a war raging in his mind. He’s surprised he slept at all last night considering where his head’s been since Jungkook laid his head on the spare pillow and felt Yoongi’s arm wrap around his waist as their eyes fluttered closed last night.

It’s not just that the sex was great and that they had a fun time last night. Jungkook’s been able to find that with other people too. It’s the fact that Jungkook hasn’t felt that cared for by a partner in so long. He could feel it in the way that Yoongi would gently touch him. He could see it in the way Yoongi looked at him while he was answering the questions asked of him. He could hear it in the way Yoongi responded to him both in conversation and in pleasure.

It has Jungkook thinking about the words his brother said to him again just the day before.

“Maybe he’d be the perfect fit for you.”

It both scares him and fills him with so much hope. He wants to run and he wants to snuggle in closer to Yoongi’s warm body. It makes him want to pound his fist against the wall and lay himself bare all over again.

He has absolutely no idea what to do. So he just continues to lie there. He knows he should probably get home soon. He wants to make sure he spends plenty of time with his family too. His brother didn’t just opt to stay in their childhood rooms and take off work all week to not see Jungkook at all. He really should get up soon.

Yoongi rustles in the sheets behind him and hums as if he’s getting used to his voice again after sleeping for seven hours. “Good morning,” he says with a sleep laden, gravelly voice. Jungkook wants to sink into it.

“Morning,” Jungkook says back. He’s not entirely sure what else he should say. He has no idea how Yoongi feels about what happened last night outside of the sex, at least.

Yoongi rolls over onto his side so that he’s facing Jungkook now. His face is still smushed into the pillow and his eyes are barely open, but his words come out clearly, “Want some coffee before we talk about any of it?”

Jungkook huffs out a laugh, “Yeah, that would be great.”

He likes that Yoongi doesn’t beat around the bush because something like this, left unresolved and swept under the rug, could have Jungkook spiraling anxiously in his own mind all day. He really doesn’t want to have to do that, but he’s also always been terrible about having conversations like this.

Yoongi comes back to the bed with two mugs of coffee and joins Jungkook, who is now sitting upright and shirtless, against the headboard of the bed. He settles in beside Jungkook and the both take a few sips of their coffee before they begin to talk again. A daytime version of liquid courage.

After another minute or two, Yoongi clears his throat, “Really sucks that you have to leave so soon.”

Jungkook nods, “Yeah, I’d stay longer if I could.”

There’s another moment of silence between them and Jungkook feels like his skin is crawling. He hates this so much – hates not knowing what Yoongi is thinking.

“How long did you say you’d be gone for?” Yoongi asks.

“Six months,” Jungkook says into his mug of coffee.

“That’s really not too long. I’ve spent longer than that on a work project before,” Yoongi states simply. There’s obviously more implied with that statement, but Jungkook is at a loss.

He shakes his head a little and looks at Yoongi with a sad smile, “We barely know each other. It’s only been one night.”

Yoongi shrugs, “It’ll be even harder to get to know each other if it ends so soon. You have a phone, don’t you?”

Jungkook knows, logically, that he’s right, but he feels bad asking for someone to wait for him like that. It hasn’t worked in the past and he’s afraid it won’t work now. The left side of his brain wins out again, though, because he won’t really know unless he gives it a chance.

“Are we talking, like, you waiting for me or would you still want to see other people?” Jungkook inquires, nervous for the answer.

“Like I said, I’ve had work projects that lasted longer than that and I definitely wasn’t seeing anyone while consumed by that. I think I can go six months without sleeping around, my bedside drawer has just about everything I need,” Yoongi says with a laugh.

Jungkook wishes he felt that light right now, but he’s still worried. “What if I end up not being worth the wait?”

“What if I end up not being worth the wait? We won’t really know until that time comes, but I’ve gotten to know your family a little and I think if, given the chance, I can get to know you more, we’ll see that it is,” Yoongi suggests.

Jungkook lets the words float around in his mind for a moment and then finally settle.

Yoongi continues, “That is, if you want. Like I said last night, this doesn’t have to be anything, but it feels like it could be.”

“I think I do,” Jungkook answers.

“You think?”

“I- I do. I want to try, at least,” Jungkook stammers out. “Maybe it’ll go by faster than we think. We can figure the rest out after.”

“Exactly. We’ll keep things light and see how it goes,” Yoongi says with a casual shoulder shrug.

Jungkook catches himself finally smiling at the thought of having someone to come back to. He’s pretty sure this is the first time he’s let himself smile about the situation since last night. He notices how good it feels to let himself lean into that sensation.

Jungkook finishes his cup of coffee and sets it down on the bedside table, “I should probably get going. I’m supposed to meet my family at some shops outside of town, in a little bit.”

“No problem. You can borrow one of my shirts if you don’t want to have to show up in the same outfit as yesterday. Most of my stuff is oversized so it should fit you,” Yoongi offers.

Jungkook thanks him and gets himself dressed, collecting the rest of his things as he goes. Then he realizes, “When will I get it back to you?”

Yoongi shrugs from where he sits on the bed, “You don’t have to, but I guess if you really want you can give it back to me when I take you to the airport.”

Jungkook truly laughs at that, “You never asked me how I got here. I drove my own car.”

Yoongi takes it in strides, “Well, then we can just drive to a restaurant in the next biggest town on your way up and I’ll order a car back down.”

Jungkook’s taken aback by how easy Yoongi is making it all sound despite the fact that he would definitely be going out of his way to do all of that. But he doesn’t let that get in the way of what could be a great last morning here. “Okay, you can drive me up to the next town.”

Yoongi hums into the last of his coffee, like he’s satisfied with Jungkook’s answer.

“But I’m keeping the shirt.”

Yoongi looks up at him, somehow seeming even more satisfied with that answer, if the look in his eyes is anything to go by.
