Work Text:
"I've got her!" The Chief exclaimed, dragging the child out of the water, and sliding her across the ice towards Violet. "It's all good!"
Never jinx the situation during the job - no sooner had Violet managed to drag the child out the cold water and to safety, the ice decided it was still a victim short.
One second Evan was scrambling to his knees, and the next he was gone from her sight.
"Evan!" Violet was torn - she couldn't leave the child, but she also had to make sure that the Chief was alright. Time was of the essence.
"Control, this is Ambo 61. We need another Ambo at our location for another one who's fallen through the ice."
"Received, Ambo 61. ETA on your second ambo is five minutes."
Those five minutes seemed to drag on for an eternity.
*
The second ambo took over the Child's care, and Violet dashed back out onto the ice. As soon as she got closer, she dropped to her stomach, and slowly began the crawl towards the gap in the ice.
Thank goodness that Hawkins was a trained EMT, and he knew how to act. But she could already see that the cold shock was slowly getting to him.
She reached out, knowing that if he pulled her under, they would die here. But at that moment she didn't care. She had one objective: pulling Evan out of the ice cold water and getting him to hospital too.
"Take my hand."
The Chief reached out, still a tad too far, only their fingertips brushing.
"You have to move closer."
Evan shook his head in understanding but struggled to respond. Time was running out.
She took a stretch of faith, and inched forward, gripping his wrist and slowly pulling him towards her.
With strength she didn't know she had inside her she pulled him out and dragged him away from the weaker ice.
"Take my coat, Evan," Violet commanded, "We need to get you into the ambo."
She half supported-half pulled her love across the ice and into the ambo.
She laid him down and began cutting of the sopping wet uniform that had stuck to him like glue.
"If you wanted me to strip, you know all you had to do was ask."
"Not the time for jokes Evan, not the time at all." Violet realised she was sounding harsh, before she added, "Once you're better and warmed, we can discuss it…"
Hawkins smiled weakly at her and let her swaddle him in layers of blankets.
"Are you going to be alright if I drive, or do I need to call another ambo?"
"I'm a medic too, Violet. I'm sure I can handle it."
"Alright, but if I don't hear from you every minute, I'm coming back there."
"Don't doubt it."
