Work Text:
To say Violet was an animal person was an understatement.
Whenever she was on call and there was some type of animal, the patient would be bombarded with several questions about said animal.
Though, she doesn't have one of her own, unfortunately. Violet always wanted one, a dog, a cat, she'd take a goldfish at this point. But, work always got in the way of her getting a pet.
Until Biscuit.
Violet had finished her shift earlier than expected, she said goodbye to Ritter, Gallo and Sylvie before going to her car. She checked her phone, smiling fondly at the ‘good morning’ messages Evan had left her.
Meow.
Was she really that sleep-deprived that e was hallucinating cats?
Violet shook her head, digging through her pockets for her keys.
Meow.
Okay, she could be going crazy or there was just a street cat nearby!
(Hopefully, it was the street cat nearby.)
Curiosity got the best of the paramedic, she put her keys back in her pocket and began following the ‘meow’ sound. The search started by looking under her car, no cat, behind a bush, no cat, following behind her every move? A cat!
Violet turned around and saw the kitten following her.
Violet could swear her heart just melted.
The cat had bright blue eyes, brown and orange fur with a little white patch covering its chest. The cutest thing in her opinion was the little white socks the cat had.Violet crouched down in front of the kitten, running her hand over its back. The kitten purred and bumped up into Violet's hand.
It didn't have a collar around its neck but the cat did look like it was only a few months old.
Either she could leave the cat here and go home, or she could adopt a street cat.
...
After a quick trip to the vets, Violet chose to adopt the street cat.
They had a new addition to the family.
Biscuit Hawkins-Mikami. (Don't ask where Biscuit came from because she doesn't know either.)
This day was going great! Finished her shift early and she adopted a cat!The only problem, she didn't tell Evan. Hopefully, he didn't mind!
Sure, adopting a cat without telling your significant other could be seen as a bit strange, but Evan loved cats. And this cat was the most adorable thing that Violet had ever laid eyes on.
She told herself that on the way home from the pet store that she'd think of ways to break the news to Evan about the cat.
That didn't happen.
Instead, she sent updates to Sylvie about Biscuit.
The panic really set in as she cradled the kitten in the crook of her arm and opened the door to their apartment with her left hand. She slammed the door a little louder than usual, drawing more attention to herself than she would've liked.
“Vi?” Evan called out, “You home?”
“Yeah…”
He left the stove he was manding and met Violet in the hallway, panicking, she turned back around to face the door.
Okay, that was weird. “Hey…”
“Hi, Evan.”
He tilted his head to the side, noticing she was holding something. “What do you have there?”
“Okay,” Violet started, “You can't be mad.”
This wasn't helping her case at all.
She sighed, taking a step forward and turning around, revealing the kitten lay in the crook of her arms. “Ta-da..?”
“Violet,” He deadpanned. “What is that?”
“A kitten.”
He laughed dryly, “I can see that, but where did you get the kitten?”
“Beside the firehouse,” she said, her voice barely a whisper. Hoping he didn't hear that, Violet took a bigger step forward, allowing her partner to properly look at the cat.
It took less than twenty seconds before Evan took the cat out of Violet's arms. The cat was incredibly cute and the idea about not about not being on board with the idea was already long forgotten.
Scratching in-between the cat's ears, Evan looked up at Violet, “What's the cat's name?”
“Biscuit.”
“Biscuit?!”
”I think it's a cute name!”
He smiled, “Whatever you say.”
They learned very quickly that Biscuit was a clingy cat.
Biscuit was constantly following Evan around. He pretended to not care but really, Evan's heart swelled every time he'd heard the bell of Biscuit's new collar trailing behind him.
There really wasn't anywhere in the apartment that Evan went where Biscuit didn't follow, just lying on the couch? Biscuit found a way to lay across him. Making a pot of coffee? Biscuit had hopped onto the counter, watching his every move. Making dinner? Biscuit was moving between his legs.
If he wasn't following Evan, he was lying in his favourite place in Evan and Violet's apartment.
The windowsill by their bed.
At any hour of the day, the cat was curled up sleeping the hours away, basking in the Chicago weather.
They couldn't even blame him, he looked so relaxed and he was so goddamn adorable.
Less than a month after they got Biscuit, Violet's camera roll was filled with pictures of him. There used to be so much range in her gallery, pictures of her with Evan, Stella, Sylvie, Ritter and the rest of her Firehouse 51 family.
But now, now- it was just pictures of Biscuit.
Him sleeping? There were at least twenty-five pictures of that.
Lying on the counter? Don't even get Violet started on the number of pictures she has captured.
But her favourite one of all time was when she came home after a long shift, the smell of a vanilla candle immediately hit her, she walked through the apartment, dropping her bag by the door and making her way to the living room.
She smiled softly at the note left on the counter about the leftovers that were in the fridge, turning around, Violet was met with her boyfriend sprawled out on the couch with Biscuit curled up on his chest.
Quickly, she snapped a photo of the two, letting out a content breathy laugh. (That definitely became her wallpaper after.)
This photo was her favourite thing ever.
You'd think for a stray cat that was found by the side of a firehouse that it would take a while for him to warm up to Evan and Violet but that wasn't the case. He was like the missing link in the apartment, he really made it homey.
The missing piece to the already incredible puzzle.
Little 'Ol Biscuit Hawkins-Mikami.
