Of Begrudging Saving and Mistrust

Summary:

A what-if scenario, where Bonnie Bennett throws the Hollow into a prison world, saving Klaus Mikaelson and by proxy saving Elijah Mikaelson. And the shitstorm that follows.

Notes:

I have a couple of stories that I have written on Tumblr that I am also going to post on Archive of Our Own, this is one of them. I have made some changes to this one than what I have on Tumblr. At the moment I'm not planning on making the same changes to the Tumblr one. If anyone is curious to read the original and see the differences, my Tumblr handle is; amariaamaris. It's only the first chapter that is crossposted, after I'm only planning on posting the rest on this platform.

Also, I made certain changes to the first chapter. So, you may want to reread it before the next chapters so as not to get to confused.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter 1: Of Begrudging Saving and Damsels-in-Distress

Chapter Text

Bonnie Bennett had heard all about what had been happening down in New Orleans. What with the original family moving in and causing the powder keg to explode. The shitstorm that came after caused devastation and many lives to be lost on all sides. The reasoning behind her knowledge? Well, once she finally got out of Mystic Falls, she travelled the world and cultivated her craft.

Bonnie found that the more she learned and the more time she took for herself; the more she was able to listen to nature and what was left of her ancestors (after the collapse of the other side). It would have been nice if she would have learned this back when she was in Mystic Falls. Though, if she were to be completely honest with herself. At that time in her life, she wasn’t willing to listen, she wasn’t willing to let  go of her own bitterness.

So, when the Hollow first resurfaced information was only whispered to Bonnie. Then the dreams started - more like nightmares. Then when the Hollow - also known as Inadu - found its way inside of Klaus’s daughter Hope, Bonnie started in-depth research.

Bonnie discovered that if she could find a way to make a prison world, much like the one that once held Malachai Parker, she could temporarily hold Inadu there. Except she wanted it to be a failsafe, with no way for anyone or anything to get in or out.

Bonnie knew it needed to be a temporary holding space until she found a way to fully get rid of the Hollow. This prison world needed to have only one way for it to open and close and it needed to last. It needed to be something that couldn't be found or stumbled upon.

She didn’t really know why she was bothering to try and save the Mikaelsons. Not to mention Niklaus Mikaelson. Especially after all the damage they caused to her and her friends, rather the only ones left that she talks to anyway. After she left, Bonnie only kept in contact with Caroline, Matt, and every once in a while Alaric (mainly for helping with his daughters). To be completely honest, she fell out of contact with Caroline a few years ago.

Bonnie shook her head as she looked around the huge compound the Mikaelson’s call home. She knew that they were distracted enough to not notice her. Bonnie nearly cheered in relief when she finally found what she was looking for - the last of the white oak stake left. Bonnie quickly ignited the fireplace in the room, knowing that she was running out of time.

She tossed the stake into the fire as she closed her eyes and chanted a spell that was of ancient Aztec origins to make sure that all the white oak is destroyed; once and for all. Bonnie made sure to channel all of the bitterness from the complete trainwreck that some special wood caused in Mystic Falls, Virginia to power her spell. After she was sure it worked, she extinguished the fire and rushed down the stairs to the area that the Mikaelsons are standing around.

With no hesitation she fires spell after spell, all of them hitting their mark; all of them meant to subdue every single one of the family members without harming them. Okay, maybe a little harm towards the vampires of the family, she never claimed to be completely above pettiness. Bonnie, using her magic, forces Klaus to his knees as she confidently strides up to him and puts one hand to his third eye and left temple and her other lands on his chest (choosing to ignore the feel of his muscles); right above his heart chakra.

That’s when she starts chanting one of the most complicated spells she has ever come up with. Bonnie could feel the Hollow fighting her, so she intensified her chanting. She got louder and louder, until she finally ripped the Hollow out of Klaus. Quickly pulling away from him as he panted (his yells of pain nearly deafened her, but she is on a mission), she took out her very own ascendent and opened a portal to the prison world that she made.

Bonnie could feel that she was running out of her magic and energy faster than she wanted. So she put everything into shoving the Hollow straight into the prison world. But as she felt her grip on the Hollow loosen, she panicked and dropped the spells she was holding up to stop his family. Bonnie hoped that by now they had figured out what she was doing and wouldn’t try to kill her.

She could feel more than see, Freya, another woman she vaguely recognizes, and Hope coming up next to her. Bonnie felt some of the strain come off of her as all four witches worked together to throw the Hollow into its prison world. Finally they got it in and Bonnie quickly said the spell to close the portal. The moment she did, she said the spell to teleport the ascendent into its hiding place and fell to her knees as she gasped for breath. Choosing to ignore her bleeding nose for the time being; in favor of focusing on the ringing in her ears and the whispers of her ancestors.

Bonnie could feel all of their eyes burning into her gasping form. Bonnie honestly didn’t think that she would get to this point, so she had no idea what to say to them. She definitely didn’t have enough magic to protect herself if they chose to try and kill her. Hell, she doesn’t even have enough to wipe at the blood escaping her nose let alone to take on one of the witches. Bonnie allowed her eyes to close for a few moments as her hair fell to hide her face as she breathed deeply in and out. She hisses slightly, feeling the runes she has carved into her skin burning. All of that energy and magic extremely agitated them. The silence surrounding all of them was full of tension and confusion.

“Bloody hell, that was intense.” For some reason those words falling from Kol’s lips was the funniest thing to Bonnie and she couldn’t stop the burst of hysterical laughter that escaped her. She tried slapping a hand over her mouth to stop it, but she gave up (once again choosing to ignore the nose bleed) and her laughter overtook her whole body. Bonnie looked around at everyone as she continued to shake with laughter and there were varying degrees of confusion, annoyance, suspicion, hesitance, and outright amusement from Kol. Ergo, the huge grin spread across his face.

The vaguely familiar witch couldn’t stop the snort that escaped her at the whole situation. Nor could she stop the exasperated sigh that left her lips, “Kol… seriously, not the time.” all Kol did in response was grin at her. From the shaking Bonnie’s body was doing she knew she wasn’t going to be able to stand up on her own anytime soon, the thought quickly quieted her. Bonnie started to shakily and weakly wipe at her bleeding nose.

Then Hope’s hesitant voice seems to silence and freeze everyone. “Does this mean that my dad doesn’t have to die? The Hollow’s gone now, right?” That question is directed straight at Bonnie and with it, everyone’s undivided attention. Bonnie immediately was able to feel her shoulders slump in exhaustion upon hearing the question. All the energy Bonnie had left over, seemed to completely get zapped right out of her. Her runes are throbbing… she hasn’t felt this tired since coming across the black magic coven that tried to suck her magic from her for some sacrifice.

She could see and feel darkness pulling at the edges of her vision, knowing that with the crashing of her adrenalin; the sheer amount of magic she used was catching up with her. Bonnie allows her now extremely leaden feeling body to land on her butt as the darkness closes around her vision. The ringing in her ears reached a fever pitch and she could feel more blood come from her nose. As the runes started to ache and pulse in pain. Before she could try and say something or try to keep herself from feeling like a damsel in distress, by fainting on the most dangerous family she’s ever come across…. The darkness took her under.

“She overused her magic, she needs rest. After she has rested you can question her all you want.” All she could make out after hearing the female's voice (was that Freya?), it sounds as though it is under water; it was a bunch of different voices mixing together and the feeling of being softly lifted up. Along with it weightlessness; she could feel defined muscles and some very expensive feeling material against her cheek. Faintly, oh so very faintly, she could have sworn she heard her ancestors whispers overlapping. “Elijah Mikaelson. The Noble Stag. The Hidden Monster. The Savior of The Bennett Line. The Red Door. Elijah Mikaelson.” Soon after, her consciousness quickly closes down and she is lost.
