Comfort First

Summary:

“. . . dare you to run to Katsuki’s house,” Tenya was saying.

“The fuck’s running to my house?” Katsuki said.

“I am,” Izuku said, already standing up, smiling like he was about to go spar against Katsuki and IcyHot at the same time. Katsuki narrowed his eyes and Izuku shrugged. “It’s a dare, Kacchan.”

“I’m timing you,” Asui said, “ribbit.”

“Got it,” Izuku said, finishing shoving on his stupid red shoes. He walked over to his bedroom door and leaned out. “Mom! I’m going to Kacchan’s house real fast.” Katsuki couldn’t hear if there was an answer, but Izuku took a couple steps back into his room. “Count me down!”

“Three,” Asui said, phone in hand, “two!”

“Remember, no quirk use!” Tenya said. Izuku raised a hand in recognition, already facing his doorway.

“One!”

“The alarm’s on,” Katsuki said. Izuku grinned over his shoulder at his laptop. His room was set up so that his table was on the opposite side of the room from his door. The walls looked, frankly, empty without the overwhelming amount of All Might merchandise.

“Go!”

Chapter Text

“Bakubro, truth or dare?” Kaminari said. Katsuki leaned back in his chair, grinning at his laptop camera.

“Dare me, Sparky,” Katsuki said.

Class 2A, in a show of typical codependency, were playing Truth or Dare over a Zoom call. Most people were on their phones as they waited to be called on, or playing video games in a couple people’s cases. Katsuki had been watching attentively. If there was any blackmail to be had, he wanted it.

“Dare you to let someone pick out an outfit for you,” Kaminari said. Katsuki shoved his chair back and stood. This was easy peasy.

“C’mon, Pretty Boy,” Katsuki said, heading over to his closet, “you’re picking me some clothes.” He tugged out his phone as he swung open his closed doors. Like this, the open door blocked off his form from his laptop camera. He took a picture of his closet and sent it to Tenya.

“I like that yellow shirt all the way to the left,” Tenya’s voice came from the speakers of his laptop, “and those light blue jeans with the paint. And that braided belt? And - and do you have accessories?”

“Of fucking course I do,” Katsuki called, rolling his eyes as he pulled open the two drawers full of shit. He took pictures and sent them over.

“The brown watch,” Tenya said slowly, “and a couple bracelets, pick whichever. And then any brown shoe, if you want to wear shoes.”

The yellow shirt Tenya picked was actually an All Might shirt - it had little white All Might heads on it. Katsuki had bought it a year or two ago in a moment of weakness and affection for his favorite hero. He didn’t own much All Might merch anymore, unlike Izuku whose every waking moment was still consumed by his favorite hero.

It was made of a really nice fabric, actually, which was one of the main reasons Katsuki had bought it. It was also, unfortunately, a button down shirt and that shit didn’t fly with Katsuki anymore. But it was a good day, so Katsuki just left the top couple buttons open and called it a day.

Otherwise, he changed quickly.

Then he paused.

Should he take a selfie?

He didn’t have any pictures with Tenya, now that he was thinking about it. They’d gone on their first date a couple days before, but neither of them had thought to take pictures. It was kinda sappy to want to take one, so Katsuki hadn’t really realized it was a thing he wanted until later.

It’d been a nice date. They’d gone to this little bookstore cafe and sat together and read for a couple hours. And then they got fast food and then -

And then they’d kissed.

They kissed like they had after the show, long and kinda slow, neither of them closing their eyes the first couple tries so they could keep looking at each other and their noses kept bumping awkwardly and their teeth had clacked together once or twice and Tenya had tasted like cherry chapstick and onions which was kinda gross but Katsuki hadn’t really cared.

Then Tenya had had to go home, something to do with his brother. And Katsuki didn’t have any pictures, just this stupid, scary new warmth in his chest that made his heart pound and hands shake.

Katsuki carefully took a selfie, defaulting to his scariest smile because otherwise his face looked too awkward. He sent it to Tenya without putting any other thought into it. He shoved his phone in his pocket and stepped out from behind his closet doors, arms akimbo as he sauntered up to his laptop.

“Ooh,” Mina’s voice crackled through his speakers, “you look expensive, Blasty!”

“I can’t believe you look like a normal human being,” Kaminari said, sounding disappointed, “you should’ve chosen someone else. Like me!”

“I’d rather die than let you dress me,” Katsuki said. Kaminari gasped dramatically, one hand pressed to his chest.

“How dare you!” He cried. Katsuki grinned and settled down at his table. It was his turn. . . well, better go all out, huh?

“Tenya, truth or dare?”

“Ugh, boyfriend privilege,” Hagakure said before Tenya could say anything. Her room in her actual house was pretty similar to her room in the dorms, and it was still disconcerting to see it through her. Katsuki didn’t even think she was wearing any clothes, which was terrifying. “He’s gonna ask Iida something really sweet, just watch.”

“You know what, Invisibitch?” Katsuki said, annoyed. A couple of their classmates snorted.

“Dare,” Tenya said. Katsuki hummed, considering.

“Let me pick an outfit for you,” Katsuki said. Somebody groaned and Katsuki flipped off the camera.

“Sure,” Tenya said, standing up, “I’ll send you pictures on my phone.”

“Cool,” Katsuki said, pulling out his phone. Iida disappeared from the frame - he’d sat up against a wall somewhere, probably in his room, so all that was on screen now was the white wall.

“Bakugou and Iida are the type of people to wear matching boyfriend shirts,” Uraraka said blandly, inspecting whatever it was she was working on. Eijirou cracked up, flopping back on his bed.

“Oh, god, they totally would!” Mina said, laughing.

“It’d be one of those ‘if lost return to so and so’ shirts,” Tokoyami said gravely from the near pitch black of his room. “They’d be pink.”

“Shut the fuck up,” Katsuki said as his phone buzzed. He unlocked it. “Oh, what the fuck.”

Tenya literally had a walk in closet. And it wasn’t like Katsuki’s family wasn’t well off, he had a pretty big closet himself and his parents owned a house (unlike the Midoriyas, who rented a little apartment not too far from Katsuki’s house). But like. He knew Tenya was rich; he just didn’t know he was that rich, ok?

There were a ton of clothes - Katsuki didn’t even think the picture did it justice.

“What happened?” Izuku said.

“He’s got a shit ton of clothes,” Katsuki said to a couple laughs. “Gimme a fucking second, I’m calling him.” He muted his laptop microphone.

Tenya picked up before the phone even started ringing - shirtless.

“Sorry,” Tenya said, smiling uncertainly, “it’s a lot of clothes. I guess video calling makes more sense.” Katsuki made a noncommittal noise, staring at the dip between Tenya’s collarbones. “Let me just-” he messed with the screen, and then the camera switched. Katsuki sighed at the loss, but watched as Tenya walked through the room, careful to walk slowly and get all the clothes.

“Wait, is that a leather jacket?” Katsuki said, straightening. Tenya laughed and backed up a couple steps, pulling out a hanger.

“It is! I had a feeling you’d see it,” Tenya said. Katsuki grinned.

“Do you have skinny jeans and a tank top?” He said with a quick glance at the Zoom call to make sure he’d actually muted it. He had. His classmates were talking about the summer homework - Katsuki had already done his, but apparently most of them hadn’t.

“I do,” Tenya said, walking to a different part of the closet, still holding the leather jacket.

He brought Katsuki to a section (Tenya had his clothes sectioned out and sorted by color like the nerd he was, why was that endearing?!) of work out clothes and tank tops. Katsuki ended up choosing a gray minecraft t-shirt from the section next to that because honestly none of Tenya’s workout stuff looked cool (and neither did any of his t-shirts but that was fine), and a pair of distressed black skinny jeans that he was surprised Tenya even owned.

“Put that on real fast,” Katsuki said. Tenya made a noise of affirmation and put down the phone, the sound of rustling fabric coming from the phone. Katsuki looked over at his classmates. Deku - Izuku, not Deku - Izuku was trying to get Todoroki to stop complaining about whatever it was he was complaining about.

“How do I look?” Tenya said, picking up the phone to awkwardly showcase his outfit. Katsuki grinned at him.

He’d tucked the minecraft shirt into his pants the same way he tucked his fucking polo shirts into his khakis, the dork. It looked fine, especially with the jacket, but Katsuki just kinda wanted to teleport over to him and plant a kiss on his cheek. Which. Oof.

“You need a belt of some sort,” Katsuki said, “and untuck your shirt.” Tenya was already moving to a different part of the room, one hand holding his phone and the other messing with his shirt. “Pick something with a big buckle.”

“A big buckle?” Tenya asked with a frown, rolling open a drawer.

“It’ll draw attention to your dick,” Katsuki said. Tenya dropped the phone.

“Katsuki!”

Tenya was visibly red when he picked up his phone, even with the camera's crappy quality.

“I’m fucking kidding, you don’t need a belt if you don’t want one,” Katsuki said, laughing. Tenya slammed the drawer shut.

“That was highly inappropriate!” Tenya hissed. Katsuki nodded.

“That’s why I said it,” he said. Tenya slapped a hand to his face. Katsuki laughed and shook his head. “I’ve muted myself on the Zoom call and my parents are talking downstairs. It’s fine, Tenya. You’re the only one who heard.”

“You could’ve told me that first,” Tenya said, but he looked significantly calmer now.

“I’m not gonna say that kinda shit in public,” Katsuki said, “ok?”

“Yeah,” Tenya said with a little nod, “I’ve noticed you aren’t a fan of physical affection in public either.” They hadn’t really done the PDA thing while out on their date, aside from the kissing. And even then, they’d found a relatively sheltered area to do that, out of sight from any passers by.

“Yeah,” Katsuki said. Tenya turned to look at the camera.

Ah, Katsuki was getting soft. He just kinda stared at Tenya’s pretty, pretty face, smiling. Just look at him, standing there all pretty and shit.

“Should I get anything else?” Tenya asked. Katsuki shifted in his chair and shook his head. Tenya smiled. “Ok. Oh! And thanks for that selfie, you look very cute. I’ll send you one too.” Katsuki fucking blushed like some kinda shoujo character.

“Oh, shut the fuck up,” Katsuki said and hung up, Tenya’s laugh ringing in his ears.

And if Katsuki set Tenya’s selfie as his phone home screen wallpaper, there was no one to judge him but himself.

--

“Oh wow!” Ponytail gasped when Tenya finally appeared back on the Zoom call.

Katsuki grinned as Tenya adjusted his laptop on whatever table he was sitting at so that it could get his whole body. He’d added some accessories and a belt (!!!) after Katsuki had hung up on him. They’d been in his selfie, so Katsuki wasn’t too surprised.

“Iida, you look amazing!” Uraraka said, clapping in delight. There were nods from several of their classmates - most had looked up from their phones and work at Tenya’s return and had just not picked them up again.

“Can’t believe they literally switched styles,” Sero said conversationally.

“Is this a boyfriend thing?” Kaminari said. “If I get a boyfriend, can I do this cute shit?”

“Shut up and look at Tenya,” Katsuki interrupted, “he looks fucking handsome.” He muted himself at a knock on his door.

“Katsu- the fuck are you wearing?” His mother said, stepping into his room. Katsuki rolled his eyes, muting his laptop audio as well.

“The hell do you want?” Katsuki said, standing up when his mom gestured for him to stand. She took him by the shoulders, surveying his outfit with a critical eye.

“Your father and I are getting groceries,” she said, “I’ve never seen you in this shirt.” And now that Katsuki was actually looking, she’d already changed out of her pajamas and put on a face full of makeup. Katsuki let her turn him like a mannequin.

“It’s fucking yellow, you think I’d wear this shit of my own violition? Use your fucking brain.” Katsuki snapped as she finally turned him back around to face her. She slapped him upside the head, frowning.

“Don’t take that fucking tone with me,” Mom said.

“Don’t fucking hit me!” He shouted, hands balling into fists and coming half way up so he could block her next hit.

“Don’t yell at me, you brat!” Mom shouted back, going for the next one. Katsuki blocked it and jumped out of range, forcing back the urge to fight back properly. She was his mom, he didn’t want to hurt her. She stomped over to him.

“Mitsuki,” Dad said as he came up into the room. Katsuki jumped forwards to hide behind him, flipping off his mom from the relative safety behind his dad. “Come on, we should go.”

“This brat,” Mom said, pointing at Katsuki, but she rolled her eyes and relaxed. “Have you seen what he’s wearing?”

“What’re you wearing?” Dad said, turning around. Katsuki straightened his shoulders and grinned at his dad. “Oh, that looks nice on you. You should wear more yellow, Katsuki. Though I wish you’d button the top buttons.”

“No way in hell,” Katsuki said, sticking out his tongue. His dad tried to catch it and Katsuki leaned as far back as he could go with a little shout of surprise. That was a game his dad hadn’t tried to play in a long time - when Katsuki was little his dad always tried to do annoying shit like that, and he’d been pretty damn successful at it too.

“Damn,” his dad said with a little sigh, “alright, Kiddo, we should get going. Mitsuki?”

“Yeah, yeah,” she said, reaching over to ruffle Katsuki’s hair, hands gentle as she quickly ran them over where she’d hit him - that was the closest she ever got to an apology. His dad patted Katsuki’s cheek and slipped out the room. His mother paused in the doorway to point at him. Katsuki finger gunned at her. She grinned and shrugged, leaving as well.

Katsuki rubbed at the side of his head where she’d slapped him. He was a little old for this bullshit, he was seventeen fucking years old, but it was whatever. He stood there, waiting for the sound of the front door closing and the alarm turning on to head back over to his laptop and turn on the volume.

“. . . dare you to run to Katsuki’s house,” Tenya was saying.

“Got it,” Izuku said, finishing soving on his stupid red shoes.

“Go!”

Izuku hurtled out of the room to shouts from their classmates. Katsuki got up and grabbed the side of his table, shoving it to the side so that he could reposition his laptop to get his window in frame.

“You’re gonna make him come in through the window?” Shouji said. “That’s harsh.”

“He’s used to it,” Katsuki said with a little shrug, settling back in his chair.

Katsuki’s parents didn’t know, but the alarm on his window was actually broken. Katsuki had discovered it when he was a kid and just. . . never told anyone other than Izuku. Back when Katsuki still got grounded, Izuku would run over and sneak in through the window rather than through the front door. Katsuki didn’t actually know how to turn off the alarm until middle school, and even then he didn’t often disarm it without his parents telling him to.

“What does that mean?” Kaminari groaned. “Does anyone else get progressively more confused any time Kacchan and Midoriya talk about their past?”

“Oh, yeah, for sure,” Ojirou said, “I’ve just been ignoring them completely.” Eijirou spluttered before breaking into another laugh. He was certainly laughy today.

“I don’t have that luxury!” Kaminari wailed, throwing himself backwards so hard his chair crashed to the floor. There was a brief second of silence before Kaminari shouted up from his bedroom floor. “I’m friends with one of them!”

“Then perish,” Ojirou said, “oh wait, you already did.”

“Someone’s in a bad mood,” Hagakure said. Ojirou rubbed at his tail.

“I stayed up till four playing video games,” he confessed, “and then I had to wake up after a couple hours for chores and shit. I’m a little cranky, sorry.” There were a couple sympathetic murmurs from the class.

“Ribbit,” Asui said, nodding, “I’ve been taking care of my siblings since I got back. They’ve been very excited to get me home. They’re only leaving me in peace right now because I’m in my parents room and the door’s locked.”

“Siblings can be very annoying,” Tenya agreed.

“My siblings and I live with my mother now,” Todoroki said, “so they’ve been barging in every couple minutes since I got home to ask my opinion on things.” He shrugged. “We weren’t close growing up.”

“That’s really sweet of them,” Ponytail said, “I’m an only child so I don’t really know what it’s like to have siblings, but it’s really sweet that they’re working so hard to get to know you!”

“It’d be nice if they didn’t knock on the bathroom door when I’m inside to ask what my favorite fruits are and why,” Todoroki said. Katsuki laughed. “Fuyumi asks about you, Bakugou.”

“Fucking what?” Katsuki yelped, laugh disintegrating on the spot.

“Oh, I didn’t know you knew Todoroki’s family,” Ponytail said. Katsuki shifted in his chair and glanced out the window. He couldn’t see Izuku yet, but he’d be coming down the street soon. They didn’t actually live that far from each other.

“He and Midoriya came over to my house once,” Todoroki said. Ponytail blinked.

“Oh,” she said, smiling despite her obvious confusion.

There was a blank silence for a couple minutes. That damn IcyHot just had that effect on conversations. Katsuki kept an eye on the road, waiting.

He didn’t want to admit, even to himself, but he was kinda excited to see Izuku. This would be the first time Izuku had been to his house since. . . fourth grade? Somewhere around there. That was the last time Katsuki remembered being grounded. And he hadn’t gotten to spar with the nerd for a couple weeks now.

“Ah,” Todoroki suddenly said, “I’ve killed the conversation.”

“You’re doing amazing, sweetie,” Uraraka said with a little giggle.

“Bakugou voice, go die,” Todoroki said in a monotone. Katsuki groaned, dragging a hand down his face.

“Oh, that’s cursed,” Sero said, visibly wincing, “that’s so fucking cursed.”

“Oh god,” Uraraka said, with all the enthusiasm of someone who knew she had to do it to ‘em and didn’t want to. “Oh fuck. Ok.”

“Don’t do it,” Mina pleaded, “Ochako, please.”

“I’m sorry,” Uraraka whispered.

“No, Ochako!” Jirou yelled from the other side of her room where she’d been practicing her electric guitar. Katsuki wasn’t entirely sure, but he thought one of her earlobes was plugged into her laptop and another was plugged into her electric guitar. “Don’t do us like this!”

Uraraka cleared her throat dramatically and pointed at the camera. “Todoroki voice! Kill me yourself!”

“Oh that was cursed!” Kaminari yelled as most the class groaned.

“I hate it here,” Kouda said with a little shudder.

“Why are we put here? Just to suffer?” Tokoyami said.

Katsuki straightened in his chair as a familiar streak of green came charging down his street. “Get your timer ready.” Katsuki tugged out his phone and started recording so he could send the video into the class group chat later. The class silenced immediately as they waited.

Izuku glanced both ways before he hurtled across the street, then up Katsuki’s lawn. He scaled the side of the building easily, without the help of the tree growing next to Katsuki’s window. He used to have to climb that to get into Katsuki’s room, but they were older and stronger now.

Clinging to the windowsill, Izuku pulled out the long, flat knife he usually brought with him. He slipped it into the gap between the window and the wall. The knife caught on the latch that Katsuki’s parents always talked about replacing but never did, and managed to get it to open. Izuku grabbed the knife between his teeth. He slid open the window and clambered inside.

He slammed it shut and grinned at Katsuki, taking the knife outta his mouth and tossing it onto the table next to Katsuki’s laptop.

“I am here!” He yelled, fists on his hips and All Might impression contouring his face. It was the same fucking entrance he’d been making since they were kids. Katsuki ended the video and put away his phone.

“Four minutes and fifty-six seconds,” Asui said, sounding surprised. Katsuki barely heard it, staring at Izuku’s outfit.

“Are those the fucking limited edition All Might footie pajamas,” Katsuki said blandly. He hadn’t wanted them. They were footie pajamas and footie pajamas were for kids. But like. Katsuki had wanted them. Izuku looked down at his red, blue, and yellow clad chest. He looked back up, green eyes finding Katsuki’s shirt.

“Don’t give me that bullshit, Kacchan, that’s a limited edition shirt that donated the proceeds to that tsunami a couple years ago that you’re wearing,” Izuku said with a cold smile, “you said there were none left at the fucking store.”

“That’s cuz there weren’t,” Katsuki said, crossing his arms over his chest, “at least, not after I’d left.”

Izuku shouted and tacked him.

For a moment, Katsuki was slammed with nostalgia - they fought a lot as kids, and they’d especially fought a lot in Katsuki’s room, or about All Might, or just in general. Usually when Izuku snuck over they’d end up fighting and getting each other in trouble (which, actually, might be why his parents didn’t replace the lock in Katsuki’s window and never mentioned if they knew about the broken alarm).

He bet Izuku was feeling it too, cuz his heart wasn’t in the fight. Normally Katsuki would be angry about that. But honestly it was fine, it was fun enough to roll around on the floor and over telegraph his punches and slam into furniture.

They split apart pretty quickly, Izuku flopping down on Katsuki’s bed to catch his breath. Katsuki shoved his desk back into its normal place. It was weird having Izuku in Katsuki’s room for no reason. He didn’t really know what to do with himself.

“Your mom still hits you,” Izuku mumbled. Katsuki frowned and left his table to stand over Izuku.

“The fuck,” he said, quietly as well. He hadn’t muted the Zoom call and their classmates were still talking.

“That’s why Iida sent me over,” Izuku said, sitting up to look at Katsuki, “partly for the game, partly to check on you.” Katsuki rolled his eyes and sat next to Izuku. “I know, I know, you’re fine, but everyone got super worried. We could see you and your parents, you know.” Izuku sighed and shrugged. “I told them it was fine and that’s how she always is, but they’re really worried.”

“They worry too fucking much,” Katsuki grumbled, but - but it kinda reminded him of a couple months ago, when they’d all taken his side against Monoma without even knowing what was going on. Or when Uraraka told him they’d all worried about him when he was absent. It was. It was kinda nice, annoying as it was.

“I know, but when you’ve got disaster classmates like the two of us, I feel like it’s kinda natural,” Izuku said, laughing. Katsuki shoved him. “What? I’m right!”

“Get out of my fucking house,” Katsuki ordered, Izuku sticking out his tongue in response. His phone buzzed. Katsuki grabbed it. “Oh, my mom texted. She wants me to tell you you’re welcome to stay f0r lunch.” Did Inko Auntie text her?

“Don’t mind if I do,” Izuku said smugly. Katsuki shoved him again, harder this time, and headed over to the table. “Oh, c’mon, Kacchan! Don’t be mad!”

“Oi, you assholes,” Katsuki said, catching the attention of his class as he leaned over his table. He didn’t sit down. “I’m fucking fine. If you’re gonna worry about me, don’t fucking send the - don’t send Izuku to come bother me. Just ask me yourselves.”

“I really don’t think your mother should hit you like that,” Uraraka said immediately, “are you ok?”

“I’m fine, I just fucking told you,” Katsuki said, “cool your fucking tits. She’s fine most of the fucking time.” Izuku came up behind him, nodding. Katsuki could see him on his own lil rectangle.

“She shouldn’t hit you,” Uraraka said firmly. Katsuki shrugged.

“Well, she does, so,” he said. He glanced over at Izuku. He looked stressed - he’d looked stressed just before he’d left to come here, hadn’t he? Katsuki turned back to the call. “And don’t fucking say shit to Izuku about it, ok? Get off his ass about it.”

“Oh!” Izuku said, sounding surprised. Then he laughed, light and kinda relieved sounding. “They didn’t say anything bad or anything, Kacchan, it’s fine.”

“Fucking still,” Katsuki said, “you motherfuckers lay the fuck off.” Izuku turned and walked a couple steps away. Katsuki muted the call and turned to him. “What’s up?”

“It’s been a bit since you’ve tried to protect me from shit,” Izuku said quietly. His shoulders and voice were shaking. Katsuki sighed and walked over to gently shove his shoulder.

“Stop fucking crying,” Katsuki said, “it’s not that weird.” Izuku smiled at him, eyes watering.

“It’s pretty weird for us,” Izuku said, but he was wiping at his face already.

“You know where the bathroom is,” Katsuki said, “go wash your fucking face.” Izuku laughed.

“Or maybe I can wipe my snot off on you,” he said, waving his hand towards Katsuki’s face. Katsuki jumped back with a shout.

“Don’t you fucking dare!” He snapped. Izuku lunged at him again and well, if this was how his day was gonna go, then this was how his day was gonna go.
