The Cliques of Hope's Peak

Summary:

Nagito Komaeda is one of the three most popular kids in Hope’s Peak Academy. A close-knit group of friends who were rich, fashionable, and gorgeous. Nagito knows with popularity comes power, and with power comes privileges, and he’s just lucky to be a part of it.

Hajime Hinata is just a random new kid. Well, he would’ve been, if he hadn’t immediately befriended the second most popular clique in Hope’s Peak Academy. The rivaling group to the, more or less, “despair trio” Nagito Komaeda, Junko Enoshima, and Kokichi Oma make up. Nagito’s insurance for a good future is in his group, and Hajime… well, Hajime could give two shits about popularity and all that crap.

But there are reasons things are the way they are. You don’t get to the top just by being pretty. You don’t become so close to another person with just time. You won’t get so powerful just by being a good person.

Even so, Nagito and Hajime are pretty different. So why do they find such comfort in each other?

Chapter 1: Prologue

Notes:

So, this story is pretty much based off of another story on the Archive called “Changing My Ending” by Eggplantouma. I really suggest you go check that out because the way they set up the groups in that story was really interesting, and the character development was just heart! Wrenching! Seriously. There’s a sequel too. I dare you to read it.

Last thing: this story will not end like either of the series! I just had to acknowledge that this is based on both!

So enjoy this komahina fic ya’ll. Hopefully nothing too bad happens >:)

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

It’s hard being perfect.

Nagito Komaeda knew that all too well.

Because he wasn’t.

Highschool popularity is exactly what it’s like in the movies. You do see cliques. There are nerds, bullies, rich kids, weirdos, and that seemingly perfect bitchy group of kids that “rule the school” like a terrible 80’s movie. Really, the only thing that’s different about Hope’s Peak Academy is that rugby replaces football.

Hope’s Peak Academy was just a perfect example of those “privileged,” “rich kid” schools that harbored stereotypes just like any other. There was a blatant divide between the kids who mattered, and the nobodies. Nagito knew that. Everyone knew that. Although, Kokichi did say he tended to exaggerate it.

Nagito furiously swung his pencil back and forth in his hands in deep thought, staring blankly out of the classroom window to his left. It was a violent tap tap tapping noise, sounding loud in the near vacant room. Tap tap tap tap tap—

He didn’t really notice it until Junko whacked him over the head with a magazine.

“Jesus, Nagito, could you cut it out?” Junko said, clearly annoyed. I’m trying to redo my eyeliner before class starts, and I need…” She breathed in. “…concentration.”

“Ah, sorry Junko!” He dropped his pencil and pushed it in front of him.

Kokichi, who was lounging in the next desk in the column, looked up from his phone, eyebrow quirked upwards in a slight grin. “Why the hell would you need silence to do eyeliner?” He asked.

“Well, I suppose you wouldn’t know, since you don’t usually wear it, do you? Eyeliner is an art, my dear. Right, Nagito?” She turned to him, expectantly.

“For some people.” He said with a shrug.

Junko whipped back around to Kokichi with a triumphant look. He scoffed and rolled his eyes, looking back down at his phone. Junko, to her hand-mirror.

Nagito sent them a small smile and looked back out the window.

Hm. What was he thinking about?

Oh, right. Stereotypes? No, that’s not exactly it.

Could you still call them “just stereotypes” if they're proven to be true?

That seemingly perfect bitchy group of kids that rule the school really did exist as well.

Nagito was just lucky to be one of them.
