"Never, my friend," Hob grins in spite of himself. "Why don't we go up to mine? I've still got that Chateau Lafitte."

Chapter 1 is a prelude of sorts, showing the rest of Dream and Hob's last meeting in the waking world. Subsequent chapters are set after the finale, before and during Death: The High Cost of Living.

"What's the kind you roll into a joint and smoke?" Hob asked, feeling more ignorant with every passing second.
Matthew snickered dopily at that and said, "So that's gonna be the flower. We only sell our house brand, Dreaming Premium, but I'm telling you, man, it's the dankest shit imaginable. Most of the strains we carry were cultivated by the owner and master grower—that's who I was talking to just now, dude's an absolute wizard at creating new strains even though he like, barely ever smokes. Indicas, sativas, hybrids—you name it, we got it." Matthew must have noticed Hob's eyes glazing over again because he added, "You have smoked before, right bro?"
"Oh—uh, yeah, totally. Big time stoner. Love the chronic," Hob stuttered, cringing inwardly and hoping he used those terms correctly.

Summary
Usually he doesn't get this deep into it. He always enjoys himself, enjoys his job, but it is rare these days that it cranks him up like this Dream has. But there is something about this creature that calls to him. Perhaps it is because Hob has always had such vivid dreams? But honestly, this was a foundational concept of the universe, the anthromorphization of the collective unconscious of all worlds, so it wouldn’t surprise Hob if every creature and every thing felt connected to him.
The information about the Lord of Dreams and King of Nightmares that had been made available to Hob before they met was uncharacteristically sparse.
