They’re almost at the seating area for the penguin showcase when Buck says, “I’ll be right back,” and jogs off somewhere before Eddie can respond. He and Chris manage to secure some seats in the second row. A few minutes before the show is set to start, Buck plops into the seat they saved for him.
“Where’d you go?” Chris asks.
“I went to grab something for your dad,” Buck replies. He holds out his closed fist in front of him.
Eddie cocks his head and puts out his hand palm up. Buck drops a smooth pebble painted with all the colors of the rainbow.
“It’s a pebble,” Eddie says.

She does ask Chris, and he thinks it’s a good idea—says as much, on the phone, and doesn’t say much else.
“Buck will probably be hovering,” is what Chris does volunteer.
It still surprises her when the man who opens the door is not Eddie. It’s—Captain America, is the thing that actually comes to mind—a man close to a foot taller than she is, if not more than that, with blond curls and broad shoulders, and he’s got a question in his very blue eyes that’s probably less friendly than the one he actually asks her.
“Uh,” he says. “Can I help you?”
