El, so curious about the world she inhabited, often asked questions like this. Definitions to store away and use for later, as if to prove to others that she deserved to be listened to because she had learned more. Will understands — there’s always been a level of disconnect between him and planning against Vecna. His friends are scared something will happen if they throw him into the middle, so he always has to be more sure, more brave, and more determined than anyone else if he wants to be involved.
It’s because of this understanding that Will eagerly gives her these names and phrases and definitions, and often gives her an answer before she even asks. But the name of this particular technique is heavy in the back of his throat.
“It’s called the dead layer.”

Summary
Mike doesn't care about a body in a quarry. His mark, a swingset, still sits on his left ankle as an important reminder. He checked. And then checked again just to make sure his brain wasn't playing a stupid trick on him. Imagine. If that body really is Will and Mike's mind is delusional that it's forcing him to see a mark that isn't there. Just the idea of that makes Mike dizzy. He thinks he'd rather die than for that to be true. But he still feels Will's terror and pain. It hurts to feel his soulmate so scared but it's grounding. Will is somewhere. That body is not his.

Shut up, shut up, shut up, the voice in his head screams by now, but one cannot interrupt Will in the middle of one of his art rants. Impossible. No chance. “And with the vastness of the sky or sea, blue is also often associated with distance, longing, yearning, and— stuff.”
“Distance”, Mike echoes, and only then does Will truly understand what he has just admitted into the air freely, completely unprovoked and voluntarily. “Longing. Yearning.”
Obviously, this is the exact moment Robert Smith decides to sing about the fact that it is Friday, and that he is very much in love.
Five times Mike distracts Will from his art assignments with his stupidly flirtatious ways, and one time Will actually needs his help to complete a coursework.

Shit. Mike felt his own jaw drop without even realizing it.
“No, he doesn’t,” Max said, but it came out more like a question than anything. And then she looked over at Mike, who was horribly red in the face and was suddenly feeling an overwhelming urge to reconnect with nature after this. “Wait. Does he?”
OR: Mike gets jealous at a party, accidentally reveals that Will has a boyfriend, and neglects to tell anybody that he's the boyfriend in question.

“That’s not my favorite.”
“Oh.” Will blinks. “What is?”
Mike’s tongue darts out to wet his lower lip. “O negative.” Will feels a flush move across his entire body. His magic hums inside of him, excited. His fingers twitch against the carton. Maybe Will was wrong, maybe this is different than having a favorite kind of pizza. More personal. O negative sits differently in Will’s head than double black olives with extra cheese does. More intimate.
“Oh.” Will blinks again. And maybe O negative sits differently in Will’s head, because it also flows through his veins. He feels obligated to tell Mike. “I’m O negative.”
Mike’s pupils widen again. “I know.” His voice is low, gravelly.
Will’s breath hitches again. “You know?” He flinches when Mike’s fingers graze his, peeling the carton out of Will’s hand.
Mike takes a deep breath. “I can smell it.”
Or, five times that Will offered Mike his blood and the one time that Mike accepted.
