    Usually Cloud would pull the pieces of himself back together, even if the cobbled facade was shoddy, even if it barely held. He can always control his body in those small ways, can hide the markers for emotions or mask the physical toll on his body. He’s calm and cool at all times, unaffected by any fight, but now he can’t. His body, his emotions are in complete control, and it’s only getting worse as he begins to shake from head to toe, his vision blurring as for the first time in years he feels tears sting his eyes—

    Cloud wakes up with a gasp in the Gainsborough’s spare bedroom. Lingering adrenaline runs through his veins and pushes him to sit up, to snatch the hilt of his sword before he fully realizes that he was dreaming. He falters, then, and sets his sword against the wall again. After a moment of hesitation, he reaches up to touch his cheek with his fingertips.

    It’s wet.

    or, Cloud has a nightmare and Aerith is there to pick up the pieces.

    The scent is what’s recognizable: a fresh earthy aroma, unthinkable in a place as poisonous as Midgar. Opening his eyes, he sees the warm filtering in through shattered stained glass, and hundreds of yellow lilies poking through the cracks of wood.

     

    And lingering in his ear, is the hum of a familiar smile, wrapping around him in a warm embrace that feels like––

    Aerith leans over him, hands behind her back with a matching grin. “Finally awake, Sleeping Beauty?”

     

    Cloud watches Aerith die once, and then tries stopping it from happening again.

    “We need your help,” said Cloud. He set the Huge Materia on the table and crossed his arms. “There’s gotta be a way to stop Meteor. Any ideas?”
    Bugenhagen hummed, stroking his short beard while running his gaze over the group. “I’ve been thinking about it. Why don’t—” He went silent when his eyes met Aerith’s. She furrowed her brows.
    Nanaki nudged his leg. “Grandpa?”
    He shook his head, still staring at Aerith. “You—My dear, you’re…”
    “What?” she asked, as a knot tightened in her throat.
    “You’re not… supposed to be here.”

     

    Aerith was supposed to die, but she didn't. Bugenhagen knows, and he knows that she knows. She's afraid to have doomed the world by surviving just a bit longer, but Cloud is there to keep her steady.
