A clap of thunder sounds outside, illuminating the bridge with a burst of light, and Olruggio stops. His eyes flash to the window, as if he’s only just noticed the storm, and he goes very still. Then he rounds on them and demands, “How long has it been raining?”
It's storming outside, and Qifrey hasn't come home.

On the other side stood a stocky, shorter man. He had shaggy black hair, a salt and pepper beard, and wore a short-sleeved flannel over a tank top and jeans with heavy duty combat boots, and a tool belt strapped around his waist. He had inked tattoos on both arms, studded earrings, thick brows and a chiseled jawline.
Good lord.
"Hi," Qifrey whispered, finding himself breathless. Oh no, he's hot.
Qifrey, a single mother of four, combats a heatwave by calling a handyman from Kalhn to get their air conditioner fixed. He really likes their new handyman, and the handyman likes him too.

His protest petered off into the now eerily silent room, and Qifrey didn't need to turn to know that his apprentices were now hanging on to their every word. You could practically see him physically concede, but the smile that lit up his face said all there really was to say.
“Alright Olly, it really does sound wonderful.” Finally, stubborn idiot. “Where might we be going?”
Olruggio almost grinned. “We’re off to Ghodrey.”
Following the successful removal of Qifrey’s Silverwood, Olruggio takes him and the apprentices on a well-deserved holiday to his hometown of Ghodrey. Healing, comfort, and plenty of fluff ensues.

Qifrey had noticed Olruggio’s voice changing over the last several months, losing its scratchy boyish quality and deepening, but feeling it rumble against his chest and stomach was simply Bad News. He realized his eyebrows and eye were scrunched tight enough that he would give himself a headache, and he forced his eye open. Past the mop of Olly’s hair were Alaira’s grey eyes, alight with mischief and peering down at him. She could clearly read every thought in his head right now and smirked at his peril. At least she was here to sour the mood. He might just survive this!

Agott trusts Olruggio more than she trusts Qifrey, and perhaps that is because Qifrey's longing is occasionally too big to be silent. He imagines that it hangs in the air like a sour smell when he takes her shopping for robes or watches her curtsy neatly to the farmers when they buy freshly milled wheat. It is humiliating and shameful to covet girlhood like this, and every time he catches himself at it, a fear runs through him so sharp that it leaves bruises on his soul – the idea that anyone might see this as perversion is more than enough to keep his nights restless and his calm superficial. Qifrey is convinced that even Olruggio, whose comments over the years have ranged from endearingly naive to knowingly supportive, would be unable to bear witness to these tendencies without misunderstanding the root of the desire.

It was torture.
Qifrey didn’t want to admit to it, he wasn’t sure he could say the words out loud.
He wouldn’t be able to handle the disappointment on Olruggio’s face, or the harsh tone it’ll stain into his voice.
He sighed, burying his face into his hands.
Qifrey already condemned himself the moment he ran from them, it was only a matter of time until Olruggio did the same.
“I left them there.”
Qifrey could hear his heartbeat in his ears, and feel how hot his neck was burning with shame.
He wasn’t prepared for it.
“What do you mean you left them there?”
The anger, the accusation.
The disappointment.
Or
A little story where everyone discovers that Qifrey, when forced to choose, will always choose Olruggio.

Summary
Coco was like a reflection of this man, though. And it made it easier for her to pick up on his cues and notice. But the other three, as well as Olruggio, could sense it. They could see when their teacher was struggling. They were overly aware of any changes in his behavior or speech, and they could quickly deduce the reasons behind this. Coco, though, seemed to be the first.
It began at supper.
Qifrey's eyes carefully moved around the room. The examination was only interrupted by Coco’s inquisitive stare, which, once noticed, felt slightly unnerving.
There was a shrug, a tilt of his head. “Coco, is something wrong?” He noticed her food was almost finished, though not quite, but she didn’t seem to be ready to release the bowl. Her hunger was definitely present as usual.
“Master Qifrey, are you okay?”
