George ignores the way Max scoffs out a laugh, and tilts his chin up with his clean hand, studying him with the same curiosity he held the night they met. “Don't laugh.”
Max stifles another giggle, exhaling, tension finally letting itself bleed out of his posture as George went back to methodically—lovingly, in a way—wiping away evidence of the evening.
The city sparkled outside, and Max swore he could see a brighter light in George's eyes. He let George treat him with such care and gentleness, and he let himself be convinced that for once, he wasn't completely monstrous.
