“Do you know how awful it is to lose everything that makes you… you?” Mira’s voice began to crack. “I can’t taste anything, can’t feel anything. I can’t even tell how long it's been since I actually cared about you two, not like I did before.”
“Mira, I-” Rumi’s attempt to comfort Mira was quickly cut short.
“Every single day I had to watch little by little the love I had for you two fade away. No matter how badly I wanted to, I just… couldn’t.” As Mira continued, Zoey noticed that Mira’s eyes were watering, she was trying to force herself to cry, to feel anything at all. None of it worked. “It’s like screaming, unable to move, while someone – something – evil steers the wheel for you.”
A long pause. Zoey and Rumi couldn’t think of any words to comfort Mira. They would soon learn that they weren’t going to be able to find any words to comfort each other.
OR
Mira’s long, slow descent into becoming a vampire.

It had been six months since they lost Rumi.
Six months since that terrible fight in the snow, when it was so cold Mira's fingers had started to go numb on her gok-do. When Zoey hadn't been able to throw her shin-kal accurately due to the wind. When Rumi had broken off from the two of them, chasing down a group of Faceless, vanishing into the storm.
It was a mistake, they all knew it.
And that mistake had cost them.
Mira would never be able to get Rumi's scream out of her memory, too far for her to do anything about it, too late to save her soulmate.
They didn't even have a body to bury, vanished into ash by the time Zoey and Mira made it to the point Rumi had been felled.
Or. Rumi is turned into a weapon. Mira and Zoey are forced to figure out if anything remains of their soulmate

“Rumi! It is you! How are you alive?” Zoey cheered, and Rumi’s head flipped toward the sound, where Zoey and Mira stood at the other end of the alleyway. Both wore all black, and Mira even had a black sunhat with a veil. Zoey moved to run toward her, but Mira’s arm shot in front, keeping Zoey from getting closer.
“I knew it. I knew it was too good to be true,” Mira said, glaring at her with hate and disgust in her eyes. Exactly the way she looked at… well, demons, but dialed up to higher than ever before. “Zo—patterns. That’s not Rumi.”

Pre-reveal Rumi takes a hit while fighting on top of a speeding train car—not from a club, but a sword straight through the chest. That should have been the end, but demons revive in the demon realm when killed. Not even Rumi expected that would apply to her as well.

“Rumi?” Mira questioned uncertainly. The demons had frozen as well, staring at Rumi as she stared back. The tense silence stretched. The hallway felt like the oxygen had been sucked out and the dim lighting cast shadows all around.
“Rumi, there’s no such thing as half demons. We would know. Celine would have told us. It has to be a trick….” Zoey said but it was clear she still had her own reservations.
And what could Rumi say to that? Celine had said she could find no records of any other half demons, not anywhere in the archive. How could hunters have never encountered a single half demon in the nearly 800 years since the honmoon was created? What were the chances they would meet them now, in this generation, when Rumi herself was one? It felt like a trap. It had to be a trap.
But…
“Rumi?”
“She’s bleeding.” She said softly. “Demons don’t bleed.”
