Summary
being with susie today made noelle feel warmer than she thought she could feel after things had been cold for so long. warm like the sun pouring down on the two of them and painting everything gold. warm like the flush across her cheeks when she was picked up and carried into the water she spends so much time thinking about plunging into. as she has the thoughts she watches kris shrink smaller and smaller, like they can read her mind. maybe they’re thinking the same things, or something very close.
watching kris squirm like this makes her feel warm, too.
is that bad?

Summary
“You know that my job is, relatively speaking, very safe, right? Keep some perspective. Uber drivers have it worse. Do you ever look at traffic fatality statistics?”
“No, I don’t. I got enough to worry about in my life, I don’t wanna know how likely it is I’m gonna get pulverized by some dipshit in a truckzilla when I’m out for groceries.”
“You should. It’s informative.”
...
She likes doing things like this--feeling a desire to do something and following through without overthinking it. You could call it impulsiveness, but she prefers to think of it as quick judgment in risk assessment. There’s an electric thrill to knowing, in (relatively) sound mind, that you’re about to do something with an unpredictable outcome, after all. It’s hard to say if she feels anything when she touches it because of that--is that an electric shock, or just how it feels to do what you want, when you want it?

Summary
By the time a missing person has been missing for four years, their being missing becomes a sort of status quo. The absence is undesired, but something their loved ones grow accustomed to. It follows, then, that after the world is saved and a prophecy is averted, the missing person’s reappearance would be an upheaval of norms; doubly so when she returns exactly as she had been when she vanished and quickly rekindles her relationship with the kid she’d been fucking, now a more appropriate age.
(In which December Holiday makes a series of questionable decisions and experiences a number of alarming and painful personal revelations.)
