At moments, sure, she was clever, but not this clever. It must have been seven years ago at this point, Penelope asking him to dance at prom, tumbling over her words with the grace of a newborn calf. Her cheeks pink, fingers playing incessantly with the hem of that obnoxious yellow dress. There was always something frumpy about her, clothes fitting awkwardly, hair askew, mascara settling too-dark beneath her eyes. But that was then. This is now. And this new, improved Penelope is anything but delicate or meek or awkward. He can’t quite put a finger on what’s so different, but as he takes her in, it dawns on him that she’s speaking. Loudly.
