Everything came back to Warren at once. Bryony raised her arm. It wasn’t enough, it wasn’t enough. There wasn’t enough time. He lurched forward, too late already. “Wait!”
Too late.
“I lied.” Bryony cocked the gun, and fired.
Or, Warren gets trapped in a time loop during the worst moment of his life. All he can do is try to improve the outcome for the better.

"Can you just fucking tell me–"
"Lichen." Grace lifted some of the pale green goop off of the dish with long, talon-like tweezers. It unraveled from itself into a string of palm-shaped leaves, curled and bubbled in a foamy, crisp cluster. "All I saw were plant cells. You coughed up lichen, I'm afraid."
Warren and Gordon have been stuck in the valley for weeks. Warren has been going through the routine, going in, going under, coming back up again with less warmth in his muscles and more blood to cough up. Until he starts to cough up something else.

In his early days working in the valley, Gordon thought that he was invisible. Every day was exactly the same. Stay out of the way, complete tasks, move on, move over, say a polite word to the important staff, just nod when nobody responds, become a shadow on the wall, move over again, fall asleep alone in a farmhouse drifting on ice and misery in a sea of nowhere, repeat.
And then something changed.
