Summary
"David first spots him leaning nonchalantly against the red brick wall as he leaves his Elizabethan poetry class on a sunny Wednesday afternoon. It takes him a moment to react, possibly because he's never seen Joseph Liebgott in civilian clothes, or perhaps because at least in David's mind, he doesn't belong on the eerily well-kept Harvard lawns."
Harvard, Spring of 1947.

Summary
“Grandpa just died.” It sounds so strange, said out loud. Almost like it shouldn’t be possible to make a statement of fact about something so monumental. Except it doesn’t feel monumental. It doesn’t feel like anything."
Wherein a coat is never just a coat, and Ewan's death has unexpected repercussions for Greg - and by extension, for Tom.

Summary
"Greg’s voice is the first thing Tom hears as he slowly drifts back into consciousness. He sounds as worried as Tom had ever heard him, as if something horrible that Tom didn’t know about had happened during the night.
When he opens his eyes, he immediately understands why."

There are a lot of things Mark doesn't want to talk about. Eduardo may or may not be one of them.

Summary
“It’s about someone on tour. Well- it’s about having a relationship with someone on tour.”
Jannik relaxes slightly, “Oh yeah? It can be difficult, I mean, it didn’t work out with me and Anna, but lots of people-”
“It’s not about a woman.” Flavio cuts across him, swivelling his head to look Jannik directly in the eye.
“Oh,” Jannik says, for lack of a better response.
“I’m gay.” Flavio says flatly, as if there was any room for misinterpretation.
“Oh.” Jannik repeats, dumbly. He feels out of his depth here, it is times like these that he feels the impact of his singularly focused lifestyle. He has had no interactions like this one before. He doesn’t want to sound patronising, but he wants to offer Flavio some words of support, so he says: “Cool.”
(Or: Jannik makes some assumptions about the nature of Flavio and Carlos' relationship. It might help him realise something about the nature of his relationship with Carlos.)

“It’s not unrequited, they’re just idiots” is my favourite genre.
“Jannik thinks: I am never going to get over you.”

Summary
Jannik hits a clean shot, a lashing forehand that lands the ball deep in the ad court, grazing the line and lifting a wisp of white off the grass. The kick of the topspin dizzies the ball into the air. Carlos, out of position, jumps and lunges toward it, throwing all of his weight forward.
Jannik can tell he’s going to miss. He’s already turning to his team, one fist raised, when the ball whizzes past Carlos’s outstretched racket.
He doesn’t see Carlos land. He doesn’t see him collapse into the dirt.
He hears a crack, like a heavy tree branch, snapping in a windstorm.
He only looks back when Carlos starts screaming.

Bookmarker's Notes
"When he forces his eyes open again, he finds himself unexpectedly surrounded by tall columns of green and purple and white—an unanticipated array of color, billowing in the breeze. Around Carlos and Jannik and the medics, the ball boys and girls have formed a circle, each of them holding up a spare towel, shielding them from view—from the intrusive eyes of the cameras, the crowd. Jannik looks up and inadvertently meets the eyes of one of the ball girls, still in her cap and sunshade. Her hair is orange, like Jannik’s. It’s braided into two tails. She’s crying. Jannik has to look away."

Bookmarker's Notes
"He had thought (...) that the danger in their relationship would be in the highs, in the adrenaline, in the excitement. He finds out, that night that it is in the lows."
