It was Max's idea to get him to do the radio station. She had told Will to listen. And she seemed to have an uncanny insight into their recent conversation. "What are you doing?" He asked.
"Nothing," she said in an innocent tone of voice which did not match her personality or her actions. He stared at her. "Helping," she amended.
"I don't need help," Mike said.
Max snorted. "Sure, Mike. Just consider my wisdom?"
Mike stood up. "Thank you for the coffee, Max. No thank you to the advice."

Summary
The story is over. His friends have moved on. Only Mike is incapable of it. He is trapped, with nowhere to go and nothing left that feels worth living for. But that’s just depression, right? Or maybe it’s something else, maybe something more sinister has survived in a place no one thought to look, and there is only one person Mike can turn to, will always turn to, even if he knows he shouldn’t.
Mike’s hands are gripping the wheel so hard that his knuckles turn white when he passes the shield by the road announcing that he is leaving. He shouldn’t. He cannot. Everything in him is screaming at him to turn around. To go back. To stop this, whatever it is. Insanity, most likely.
No. Not everything. There is this one part of him, buried deep down. The part that is yearning. The part that once was part of something better (who shared looks and shared smiles and shared hugs). It is that part who steps on the gas. It is that part who keeps his eyes on the road. On the horizon.

“What?” Will asks, a little high-pitched.
“If you confessed. What would you have told me?”
“Mike, we don’t have to—“
“I— I want to know,” Mike urges, forcing a smile. An attempt at softness, at lightness. A smile that’s trying to say, this can just be for fun, right?
Will studies him for a few moments, brows furrowed. He sighs, sitting up and bringing his hands to his lap where he fidgets with them. “I don’t know. I hadn’t thought that far ahead. I probably would have made a complete mess of it.” He huffs a cautious laugh.
Mike widens his smile, tilting his head to say, go on.
OR: Mike and Will leave Hawkins together for a road trip during the summer of 1989. The two weeks they spend together change them and their relationship irrevocably.
