“Sorry, I didn’t mean to startle you.”
He shuffles closer. They haven’t been on the best terms, recently, and it feels awkward being together in the same space, even though they still live together. They have done their best to avoid each other for weeks now, going as far as taking all of their meals outside, trying to interact as little as possible, with civil distance and jaw-clenching respect. Pierre will never tell Esteban how much it hurts him, treating each other with such cold indifference. Esteban wouldn’t understand anyway. So he pretends he’s fine with their personal Cold War that somehow has taken hold of his personal life, and he tries not to get into Esteban’s way, though Esteban’s social life seems rather dull compared to his own. Sometimes, Pierre goes as far as spending the night out – those are the days in which their Cold War turns into nuclear warfare.The worst part of going through a divorce with someone you love is, well, that you still love them. In the midst of their divorce, Pierre finds himself comforting Esteban after a gruesome nightmare.

“Can you please…” he starts, breaking off almost immediately. He needs to take a deep breath to steady himself, but the room spins around him anyway. “Can you please go somewhere else? I can’t-”
I can’t keep doing this. I can’t concentrate. I can’t move. I feel like I’m pinned down, nailed to the floor, and it’s making me antsy. Of course he doesn’t say any of this, he’s still pissed at Esteban for how their marriage ended, but he thinks about it oh, so loud. All of his thoughts have been feeling louder, in the past month. It’s like talking to yourself in a microphone with warped output settings; you know your voice is all distorted and way too loud, but you simply can’t undo it, there’s no remote control, no volume knobs to try until you finally hit the right pitch.
A slightly condescending smile blooms over Esteban’s lips. He’s wearing that old, fuzzy sweater Pierre had bought him in Paris when they were celebrating their first year of marriage under the Tour Eiffel, like the cheesiest, cringiest couple in the world. It feels like he’s being stabbed. Esteban’s irony is staggeringly cruel, sometimes.In the end, it's not divorce that separates Pierre and Esteban.
