    When the companions glimpse the memories of Vellioth the Martinet from his enchanted skull, Halsin recognises him immediately. Long ago, during his enslavement in Menzoberranzan, Halsin suffered immensely at Vellioth's hand, before he became undead. And he knows that beneath a monster such as him, Cazador would have suffered more than most could ever imagine.

    As Cazador lies dying on the floor, Halsin finds he cannot walk away. Instead, making a choice very few would understand, he saves the fallen vampire lord as he bleeds from two dozen stab wounds, and they reach an uneasy truce, discovering that the monster he expected to find is far from the whole truth about who Cazador truly is – or perhaps, could be.
