Summary
Penelope knew the truth of her malady—call it hysteria or some other pretty name—she was lonesome. Her life was monotonous and dull, devoid of color. She had already reached out with both hands and grabbed for what little she was permitted to have and even some she wasn’t—balls, social events, a friendship with Eloise, Whistledown, independence. None of those erased the pain of a decade of being found wanting by the very men she was reared and raised to attract and serve. Dreams of being a wife and mother dying and curling into ash with every passing season.
There had to be more and yet all she found behind it was melancholy. She knew it wasn’t something that country air would fix. Country house parties had plenty of fresh air but didn’t shift her mood. Instead, she just found herself looking into her future and saw… bleak nothingness.
So yes, she knew she had to do something if she were to survive. Perhaps treatment for hysteria was the answer and Colin, it seemed, held the cure.

“What if you could get treatment for your hysteria even without the help of the doctor?” Colin said excitedly, pulling her to a stop with her gloved hand in his.
“What are you proposing?”
“Dr. Walker was most detailed in his descriptions of his work. That is to say, I am fairly certain that between what he has told me and what I already know, I could help you in his place.”
Colin watched Penelope’s eyes widen at the proposal.
“Oh Colin, are you serious?” she breathed, excitedly.
“I would only treat you with utmost respect. And you could be fully comfortable with me as I am not a stranger.”
“I would be forever indebted to you for even offering to help me as such.”OR
Pen is suffering from what Colin is sure is hysteria but, as she is unmarried, she cannot obtain the services of the physician who treats the ailment. Naturally, Colin offers to treat her himself.
