This is one of those AUs that should be canon. Shane makes a friend as a kid, and then is the instrument of his own destruction, and then years later they rebuild. Child!Shane feels SO VERY REAL in the first chapter; it's probably the best-written take on Shane as a kid I've ever read, hands down. The second chapter is hilarious, sad, and wonderful by turns. The author is amazing at writing side characters that have five lines, and yet feel like fully realized people. You absolutely do not need to know Shadow and Bone or read the story this is spun off of to enjoy chapters 1 and 2 of this (the other fic is definitely necessary for Chapter 3).

Wonderful and devastating. It has hilarious moments but also thoughtfully considers what it would be like to come to terms with your sexuality when religion is this deeply interwoven into your life. The points where characters miscommunicate are thoughtfully and perfectly done. Shane is an unreliable narrator, and the author has written this well enough that you can catch glimpses of Ilya's point of view through Shane's fog. This will break your heart and then put it back together.

This story left me breathless. Really interesting exploration of a different path for Shane. Pairing Shane with someone very different highlights different facets of Shane's personality. (Still with a happy ending!)

Sexy, emotional Pride and Prejudice-influenced story, with beautiful and evocative descriptions of Outer Cape Cod in late autumn. This manages to hit a lot of the beats of P&P while being its own very different thing (Darcy and Elizabeth never fucked this much!) Really gives a very specific feeling of being a writer in New York; the characters are appropriately tweaked to the environment but are still identifiably them. The use of actor-not-in-role photos usually squicks me hard, but here they are used sparingly and work in the context of the story. The sequel is fantastic too.

“Holy shit, dude,” Hayden whispers, too loudly, as he pulls Shane away. “No way you were just talking to Ilya Rozanov.”
“Uh, yeah. We just met. Wait, did he lie to me?” Shane asks, looking back over his shoulder where Ilya is now standing next to a short but very muscular woman with long black hair. “What does he play?”
Hayden stops, so Shane does too.
“You don’t know who that was?”
Shane makes a face that says ‘no shit’, and waits for an answer.
“Dude. You are so innocent. Ilya Rozanov, ‘Russia’s Greatest Love Machine’?” Hayden says, like it’s obvious.
Shane looks at him blankly, and then Hayden laughs. Not like, a chuckle. He full on cackles, bending over like he can’t even contain it. “Man, he’s like prolific.”
“At what?” Shane snaps, because he’s getting really sick of not being in on the joke.
“He’s a porn star, man.”
“A-” Shane says, swallowing thickly. “What?”

This is as scorchingly hot as you would expect from the setup. But it also deals with the unique dynamics of someone who works in the sex industry that wants a relationship (rather than just a hookup), and the vulnerabilities of a civilian trying to work their head around it, leading to absolutely heartbreaking moments before the happy ending.
