But then a girl with vibrant pink hair bounced up to her counter, eyes sparkling as she ordered 'Two plain taiyaki for me and my friend Nene-chan!!' with enough enthusiasm to make heads turn. Beside her stood a quieter girl with gray-green hair, looking slightly overwhelmed but smiling fondly at her energetic companion. Just two friends getting taiyaki, Sachiko thought. Nothing unusual about that. Except they kept coming back."
A taiyaki vendor watches two regular customers transform from friends to girlfriends over the course of eighteen months, one "WONDERHOY!!" and shared pastry at a time.
