Heartbreak pulled his lips into a smile he didn’t properly feel. “Are you going to kill me, Isabel?”
Something flashed in Belly’s eyes, and he wished he was still fluent in every emotion she felt. “I’m not going to kill you on purpose. But, Conrad, i–if it comes to it…” For the first time that day, she held his gaze completely without her focus flickering elsewhere, and that was how he knew she was telling the truth, even if her face was unreadable. “I’m coming home. Nobody—not even you—is going to get in my way.”
That’s my girl, he thought.
Conrad volunteers to save Jeremiah from the 80th Hunger Games. But, unbeknownst to Panem, his brother isn't the only reason he's launching himself into the arena. Because Isabel Conklin is the other tribute and, despite their history, he is determined to bring her home or die trying. Literally.

Belly is back in the United States for exactly three weeks before she contacts Conrad.
She doesn’t mean it to happen that way. Despite how it will later seem, she doesn’t research what the respectable amount of time before reaching out to her ex-boyfriend who confessed his love to her just nights before her wedding to his brother is, though the thought had shamefully crossed her mind, even in Paris. She doesn’t choose a three week time period and meticulously count down the days until her three weeks are up, leaving her free to reach out with an uninhibited conscience. She doesn’t plan it at all. But when she does decide to reach out, it just so happens to fall on the 21st day of her return.
OR: Conrad never visits Belly in Paris, and she can't say no when he invites her to visit him in California.

Her body was humming with it—a low, contained panic that she couldn’t settle. And she knew she should say something else now. She knew she should be talking more. But then footsteps sounded in the hallway before she could gather her thoughts.
Summary: An alternate Season 3 where Conrad never got therapy, ended up with a girlfriend instead, and the ripple effects of those decisions in the lead up to the wedding.

She has thought about him before, of course, but in the way people say to focus on something else when someone is facing a fear of heights: an unrelenting, all-encompassing devotion to not thinking about it that you cannot falter in for even a moment—or you will look down and be hopelessly lost.
