Magicians of a certain caliber always came back as gods. So when he died, the army took what was left of Captain Blackwood’s body and rendered it down to clean bones in a vat of lye, and then they took the bones and put them in a frankly dreadful ostentatious reliquary, all crystal panels and gilded laurels and velvet. They put it on display at his funeral, and then when that was over, they put it on display in a glass case in a hallway in the Ministry of Defense, along with his musket and his favorite cigarette case.

And once you had the right Katherine, it wasn’t automatic bliss. One of the downsides of living in a place where technology was so advanced you could put the internet in your brain was the fact that it had the chance to go wrong in remarkably new and terrifying ways. For instance, a haptic virus that would entirely erase a person's inhibitions.
Any stray thoughts or repressed desires would be immediately acted on, no matter how inadvisable. A person might kiss their coworker, or punch their irritating boss, or balance on a windowsill on one foot.
