Joel stops, all the muscles in his body locked up, the rifle half-raised and the barrel pointed at the knees of a mangy man with a thick neck and stringy hair. He’s got one hand locked around the back of Ellie’s neck, fingertips gripping hard enough that even from here Joel can tell she’ll have bruises.
His other hand is pressing a thin blade against the front of her throat.
He nods at the gun in Joel’s hands. “Drop it.”

Summary
He knows from the moment he sees Joel helping the girl down from the horse she’s on that something’s up. There’s an ease to the movement that says he almost certainly helped her up on the horse as well, and the way she moves with absolute trust that he won’t let her fall says there’s a bond there that’s had time to develop.
The girl sticks close to Joel’s side, eyes wary, as he guides her back over.
“This is Ellie,” Joel says before turning to her. “This is my brother, T-”
“Tommy, yeah. I heard. Not all of us have shit ears, grandpa.”
He blinks at the comment, but Joel doesn’t seem offended, even as he rolls his eyes.
This is his second hint.

Summary
“Catch,” he says, and she barely has her hands up in time to catch the two projectiles he underhands at her. He doesn’t stop to watch her reaction, finishing packing up their camp so they can get back on the road.
“Are these…yours?” She asks after a moment, and he turns back to see her looking at the socks in each hand a little dubiously.
He snorts and turns away.
“Those look like they’d fit me?” He asks dryly. He’d had to guess at her size back at the store, but he’d done enough time shopping for Sarah that he can make a guess, though Ellie’s feet seem significantly smaller than Sarah’s, which makes sense given how much shorter she is.
“Did you…just find these?” She asks, and he looks over his shoulder.
“Grabbed them at the shoe store,” he says, giving up on torturing her longer. She deserves to be fucked with to learn a lesson, but he’s hoping one night of feeling embarrassed will be enough. “Now c’mon, let’s go.” He turns away, and when she calls after him, he barely turns his head. Best not to make a big deal out of this, lest she gets ideas about the dynamic here.

Summary
There was a body. Even far away, the smallness of it was clear. It had to be a kid. A little girl. Her face was turned over, hidden in the snow. From the opposite direction, there was a trail of bloody footprints, their petite size matching the smallness of the body.
It was a nauseating sight.
Tommy stared, his eyes made dark with gloom. “God, look, Joel,” He said, his eyes boring into the girl, her frame so small that it was nearly completely hidden in the snow. Only her hair moved, its snow-kissed edges spurred on by the breeze. “It’s just a kid.” There was mourning in his voice, an immediate assumption that the girl was dead.
Then she shivered.
"Christ, Tommy.” As quickly as he could, Joel climbed down from his saddle, and then quickly started towards the girl. “She’s still alive.”
TLDR// Instead of meeting in the Q.Z like the show, Ellie is alone until the aftermath of episode 8, where Joel finds her outside of Jackson, alnost frozen to death. There are a lot of kids in Jackson. He sees Sarah in all of them, but with her, it's even more obvious. He takes her in. AU mixed with post-ep 8 recovery.
