“It’s not that bad, actually,” Will says, with a smile Mike can tell is just a bit forced. “We are both tall enough, so we still should be able to see fine.”
But looking at the people in front and around him, Mike knows that Will would have to be on his tiptoes to really see the stage, and would end up watching the show mostly from the big screens. A good boyfriend wouldn’t let that happen.
“Or…” Mike starts, with a face Will learned to fear as it would usually preface the worst of his plans, “we could push our way to the front.”

Buck opens his mouth to redirect — it's a reflex, the correction sitting right there on his tongue. This isn’t the first time they’ve been mistaken for more than two totally platonic best friends who are both men and also raising children together.

But suddenly Eddie’s hand is on his back. Not his shoulder this time, but lower. A few inches lower than two totally platonic best friends who are both men and also raising children together would justify.
Eddie’s palm presses flat against the base of Buck’s spine, fingers spread wide like he’s anchoring them both to the same spot.
“Thank you so much,” Eddie says. “We’re really proud of him.”

So even though he’s tired from his last shift still and distantly wishes he was home, he gave the babysitter the night off and brought Christopher to the station for their annual holiday party.
He doesn’t regret it, seeing the smile on his son’s face, hearing his laugh from halfway across the room. Anything that makes him this happy is worth it.
Which is maybe why Eddie also decided to invite Maddie and her niece, Mara Buckley to the party, too.
