"Speaking of Eddie," Maddie continues. "What did he say when you told him what you're thinking about Theo?"
"Uh, I haven't told him yet," Buck says. "I wanted to talk to you first."
Maddie puts down her spoon, eyes widening. "Oh." She presses a hand to her heart. "Oh, wow. Okay, well, I'm honored that you wanted to tell me first."
"Of course," Buck says quickly. "What you think — your opinion means so much to me." He reaches over to squeeze her hand. "You know me so well."
Her eyes fill, and she turns her head to wipe them on her shoulder. "That means a lot. You're going to be a great parent — foster parent — to Theo. I know it."
"Thanks, Maddie," Buck says, blinking away his own tears.
"You know what else I know?"
"What?"
"You're going to feel better after you talk to Eddie. You should tell him soon."

Summary
"— I've always thought, you know — I'm straight." Ryan lets that sink in for a beat. "And that's gotta mean Eddie's straight. That's how I've been playing him."
The podcast host, Theresa, and Oliver are both staring him down. Theresa with focus, Oliver with obvious trepidation. Ryan stalls out for a moment at the sight of Oliver's wide blue eyes and incredulous eyebrows.
Theresa slides in smoothly, breaking off the silence before it has the chance to become dead air. She turns her attention to the other side of the couch. "Oliver, I remember from a couple seasons ago, you told everyone that you started to play Buck as bisexual before you ever heard about 'Buck, Bothered and Bewildered.'"
"Hmm," Oliver coughs to stall. "Well, yeah. That was a decision I made for Buck's character."
Theresa turns back to Ryan. She smiles sweetly. "Ryan, are you saying you've changed how you're playing Eddie, too?"
"Exactly," Ryan says. "What I realized," he continues, swatting at Oliver's biceps so that he'll let him get this out, "is just because I'm straight doesn't gotta mean that Eddie is."

Summary
"If — if I'm not going back to the firehouse," Buck swallows nervously, his eyes shifting away from Eddie. "Then we're going to drift apart. Me — from. All of you."
"That's not true," Eddie says as he switches to the chair adjacent to Buck — sitting across from him feels much too far away.
"It's not like you guys'll do it on purpose, it's just … that's what happens."
Eddie shakes his head, eyebrows furrowing in distaste, but before he can verbalize any of the denials and rebuttals that are percolating, Buck continues.
"It's okay, Eddie. I'm used to it."
Buck gets bad news and instead of retreating, he goes to Eddie.

"Why is he so self-sacrificing all the time?" Eddie asks.
Maddie nods. He looks back at her, only to find that her eyes are a little shiny — Eddie probably could have anticipated that she might get worked up about all this. And then, all at once, it's like she bursts, unable or unwilling to keep holding it all in. "I hate it too. I can't believe he was just so ready to stay there, to be Derek."
"Wait —"
"Like, after everything with Daniel? All he's done to learn who Buck is? He's just. Going to pretend to be someone else's kid?" A tear shoots down her cheek and she wipes it away with the napkin from before.
"Wait, wait, wait," Eddie says. "I'm confused. What are you talking about?"
Maddie sniffs and looks at him in surprise. "What are you talking about?"
Eddie visits Buck, then Maddie, then Buck again.

Summary
"What? What's wrong?" Maddie turns down the hallway, and she can see Eddie's room. It's right there.
"I think she just got back," Buck whispers. "Tell Chris I love him, I'm — I'm coming home. I'm not giving up, I'm going to fight."
She comes to a stop in the doorway to Eddie's room, panting. "Buck, wait I've got —"
The line goes dead.
"— Eddie here …" she trails off, making eye contact with a startled Eddie, sitting up and alert in his hospital bed.
"Was that —?" Eddie sits up as much as he can.
Maddie and Eddie finally go on that date.

"Hey," Eddie says, catching Buck's attention.
Shit. It's probably too much to hope that Eddie didn't notice his panicked response to their little dip in altitude.
Buck doesn't reply, focuses on taking another breath and steeling himself before he faces Eddie.
A hand covers his on the armrest — Eddie's warm, muscular hand — and squeezes.
"What should we do in Nashville tonight? Hot chicken?"
Buck lets out a startled laugh. "Wh — what?" He was certain that Eddie was about to interrogate him. Buck tries to pull his hand back to his lap, but Eddie's hand tightens over his, keeping it in place.
"I know you know about Nashville hot chicken, Buck," Eddie teases.

Summary
Eddie lets his head fall back against the couch and closes his eyes. Chris is safe, and close enough that Eddie can feel him breathing. Buck is here.
Buck is here, and he could have been here earlier, except Eddie scrolled through his contacts for Athena's number first thing, and then everything moved so quickly, and it wasn't like Buck could have done anything in particular to help find Chris. The professionals were on it. If Athena wouldn't let Eddie go out looking, there's no way she would have agreed to Buck searching the streets.
The truth is, as Eddie paced his house with his phone in his hand, he knew he could have called Buck. They're on a forty-eight off. But there was a part of Eddie that thought — he didn't deserve that. The relief and strength that Buck's presence brings. The knowledge that he loves Chris, knows him almost as well as Eddie does.
That kind of comfort is for dads who don't keep losing their kid — over and over and over.
So he didn't call Buck.

"You know," Buck says, taking a drink from the water bottle he keeps in his truck, "for a second I thought Athena was trying to set us up."
Eddie fumbles buckling his seat belt and looks up fast. He feels his cheeks pulse red because — it's a ridiculous idea. Everyone knows Eddie is straight. Athena wouldn't —
Buck continues, "When that mental health cop —"
"Alex," Eddie fills in, wondering where Buck is going with this.
"Right. When Alex walked in." He puts the truck in reverse, checks his blind spot.
Eddie exhales as he watches Buck expertly navigate around the pillar he parked next to in the hospital parking garage. Athena wouldn't set them up with each other, and that's not what Buck meant. "Yeah," he says, laughing a little as the tension deflates.

“Eddie,” Maddie says. “I know our kids are different ages, and our situations are different, but — it kind of sounds like you need something else besides your kid and work, too.”
Well, I used to have a best friend, Eddie thinks, then pushes the thought away. “I … I have other things. But Chris and the job are definitely the most central right now.”
"You know, you can’t put yourself last all the time, Eddie.” She laughs a little. “Straight from my therapist’s mouth to your ears! Ooh — you know what? I’ve got a great idea.”
“Oh?”
“You should come to book club. It’s something I do with my parent friends. We take turns hosting, and it’s my turn!”
Sometimes the best part about reading is getting to learn more about yourself.

Summary
Eddie tries to peek out the windows to see what's out there as he approaches the door, but Buck moves to obstruct his view. "Hey, uh. So. I found … uh, this piece of furniture, on Marketplace. And if you hate it, it's fine. No biggie! I just … it was such a good deal!"
They don't need more furniture. In fact, they actively need less, so Buck wouldn't buy something new without a really good reason.
"Okay, Buck, I trust you. What did you get?"
"It's … I guess, I mean, um. Well, I think you should just come see." Buck turns around before Eddie can reply and heads out the front door.
Eddie stays hot on his heels for barely even one square of sidewalk, stopping in his tracks when he sees the bright red metal frame that's strapped down in Buck's truck bed. It's upright, so Eddie has a clear view of what Buck picked up for them.
It's bunk beds.
Buck and Eddie try to process their grief about Bobby's death and figure out what they mean to each other, all while squeezed into Eddie's two-bedroom house.

It's his family.
Oliver turns to stare at Ryan. "Yeah," he says. "Exactly."
"No, but." Ryan is shaking his head, back to flushing wildly. "I'm looking at you how I look at you. I mean — Eddie's just looking at Buck like how I look at you."
"Huh." Oliver opens his mouth, and he already knows he's about to cross a line, but the words come out anyway: "So … you want to kiss me as much as Eddie wants to kiss Buck?" He's trying for a teasing tone, but it comes out as a challenge.
Ryan reels back in shock. "What?"
After a day of interviews and an evening of drinking, Ryan and Oliver watch Buddie fan edits together back at the hotel.

Eddie's heart beats in his throat while he watches the typing dots.
[Buck 7:50 p.m.]: didn't you see the way nurse 2 was looking at nurse 1??!?
Christ, Buck. Eddie runs his hand over his mouth, feels his cheeks start to burn up. How is he supposed to know which one of them is Nurse 1 and which one is Nurse 2? But … he knows. He's pretty sure he knows.
Eddie starts to type, I think I was just looking at you like normal, then backspaces like his life depends on it.
Buck and Eddie watch Hotshots together every Thursday — and spend all the days in between texting about their nurse characters.

"Someone special there tying you down?" Captain Morales asks.
Eddie's breath catches in his throat. "Yeah," he chokes out.
"That's two for two now on my new hires leaving the job for their wives."
It's a joke, it's meant as nothing more than a joke. Eddie makes a panicked noise anyway.
"Or —" Captain Morales continues. "Well, I suppose I shouldn't assume."
"No, Um. It's … my … Buck."

Summary
Of course Eddie's been imagining his reunion with Buck.
In his imagination, they're out front of 4995 South Bedford Street, and Christopher is standing between them. Buck greets Chris first, makes eye contact with Eddie while wrapping Chris in his arms, and they look at each other and grin. Eventually Buck pulls Eddie in for a hug, and it lasts so long he gets lost in it, and —
"The airport police have sorta been on my case," Buck murmurs into Eddie's hair, interrupting his recurring fantasy. "I've been idling here for a while."
Buck picks Eddie up at LAX for Bobby's funeral.

Summary
Eddie ignores the transcript preview, not wanting to be spoiled, thumbs the volume-up button a few times, and then hits Play, tossing his phone into the empty space next to his pillow. He settles in on his back, pulls his cold hands back under the blanket, rucks his shirt up — Buck's shirt, he realizes with a shiver — and interlaces his fingers atop his belly as the audio message begins.
" ... Hey, Eddie," Buck says, voice laden with the telltale scratchiness of having just woken up. "'m still in bed," he adds in a low in timbre.
Buck's voice often gives Eddie goose bumps. It's a thing. Whatever.

“Anyway … love ya, man," Buck says in the recording. "You’re my best friend.”
Oh, god. Eddie pulls Buck’s shirt up over his face and focuses on breathing through the fabric. Why are his earlobes tingling?
“Okay. I’m gonna send this now. Thanks for listening. Miss you. Bye.” Buck says this all very quickly, like he’s sprinting to the end of the message.
There’s a little noise indicating that the message is over, but Eddie just … sits. Just frozen. They’ve said I love you before, right? He can’t think of when, but they must have.
All it takes to get Buck and Eddie to talk about their feelings is 800 miles between them, a stolen couch, a fake boyfriend and a bunch of audio messages.

“Buck? Hey! I’m stuck in the craziest traffic, just trying to get Jee from daycare!”
“Eddie’s moving,” Buck blurts out on the other end.
Maddie inches the car forward as she recalibrates — looks like it’s going to be one of those conversations. She defaults to big-sister snark. “Hello, Maddie, how are you? I’m doing great, Buck! What about you?”
He sighs gustily, making her car speakers crackle. “I just told you how I am, Maddie! Eddie’s —”
“He’s moving. I got that. How is Buck doing?”
Buck calls Maddie. Maddie calls Eddie. Eddie calls Buck. They get there.

Buck’s finishing up his meal, scraping the bottom of his plate, eyeing Eddie’s still-full dish across from his seat, when Bobby clears his throat again, quieter this time. Not enough volume for the whole table to come to attention.
"Buck,” he says, catching his focus. “You were the call."
"What do you —" When he realizes what Bobby is saying, his back straightens and his jaw comes to a rigid stop. He looks between Hen and Chimney who both nod in confirmation.
Hen dabs at her mouth with her napkin and sets it down in front of her, pretty clearly buying herself some time to gather her thoughts. "When you were struck by lightning, you — well, you —" Hen gestures like she’s not sure what to say. “It looked a lot like that stunt double today.”
Buck doesn’t understand why everyone — especially Eddie — is on edge after the Hotshots call.

“Did you see me come over the back of the couch earlier?” Eddie asks.
It’s such a non-sequitur that it makes Buck laugh a little. “Yes, I did. Very cool, man.” He’s only half-teasing. Eddie could make anything look cool. He just also happens to look silly most of the time too. Like now, for example. Lounging over top of Buck on his couch in this ridiculous get up.
“I’ll go get us a snack, and—and, I’m probably going to do it again.” Eddie whispers the second part, like it's a big secret.
Buck and Eddie sit on the couch.

At first, Eddie thinks nothing of it. He lives in LA: there are plenty of ads specifically for queer people all over the place, so it’s not like he’s never seen a billboard with a rainbow on it.
Then Buck starts talking about data privacy and the ads just keep coming, so Eddie starts to wonder if the advertising companies know something about him that he doesn’t.
