Summary
“Let’s have a feral day,” Shane said. The dawn sun was shining over the lake and in through the cottage’s windows and bathed Shane in his compression shirt and shorts in a soft yellow glow. They were planning on a morning run—something about Shane’s need to stay just as in shape while they were packing on pounds in the off-season.
“A what?” Ilya asked as he cracked open one of the premade protein drinks from Shane’s fridge. Ilya was partial to chocolate, but he was finishing off the last of the blueberry banana flavor Shane had gotten in a sponsorship deal and promptly discovered he fucking hated. He’d said it tasted like omega, but that had never been a problem for Ilya.
Shane stood up, the stool scraping across the wood floor with a muffled whoosh from the felt pads on the bottom. He walked to the sink and rinsed out his glass. “A day where we just do whatever our instincts tell us to do. No holds barred.”

Summary
“Hey, before we give out the award, can I get a selfie?” Rozanov asks, in a strangely stilted tone.
“What?” Shane immediately responds, not needing to read the teleprompter for that one.
“This isn’t going to happen again, is it?”
The tail-end of Rozanov’s question falls quiet, uncertain, instead of lifting in a joking lilt as the scriptwriter no doubt intended. Shane would love to throttle whoever wrote these fucking lines. He grits his teeth, ignoring how his heart is twisting in an ugly knot.
“Sure, why not? This is probably the last time you will see old Rozanov and new Hollander together.”
(Shane Hollander, freshly retired, flounders amidst the dawning realisation that he might be a little in love with Ilya Rozanov. They reunite in Las Vegas, 2014.)

Summary
Everyone knew who would win Rookie of the Year at the MLH awards. The media often likened Rozanov’s meteoric rise to Shane’s own career trajectory a decade ago. The next Shane Hollander, the headlines liked to say, as if they were gushing reverently about the second coming of Christ.
(2011, Las Vegas. Shane Hollander, thirty-one, watches the supernova that is Ilya Rozanov take everyone’s breath away, including his own.)

“Are you ok?” Shane asks. “Take your helmet off.”
“Dad, is fine.”
“Is fine? It’s fine,” Shane corrects. “Don’t copy Papa’s grammar.”
“Ugh, Dad!” Danny huffs.

Summary
“You broke up with her,” Ilya says, arms loosening against his chest.
“No, she, uh—” Shane ducks his head, avoiding Ilya’s eyes. “We slept together. And she kind of … she didn’t confront me, I guess. But she talked to me. Kind of hinted that she thought I might not be…”
“Into girls?” Ilya finishes for him.
“Something like that.”
“You denied it?”
“No, I— I told her. About me. About—us,” Shane’s head snaps up, a hand lifted in Ilya’s direction. “Not about us, us. That I’d been sleeping with someone. Another player. I didn’t tell her about you.”
OR: Shane comes out to Rose and runs toward the safest pair of arms he knows: Ilya’s.
