Hours blurred. The lights softened toward the last call. Henry found himself back at the edge of the room, breathless. Alex approached, flushed and bright-eyed, the brown haired woman trailing behind him.
“Hey,” Alex said, leaning in to be heard. “You disappear?”
Henry shrugged. “Just dancing.”
Alex studied him for a beat, something thoughtful crossing his face. “This is Melanie,” he said, gesturing to the woman. “Melanie, this is Henry. My best friend.”
The word landed heavier than Henry expected. Best friend. A title and a double edged sword.
