“I’ve designed many buildings in my career,” Kaveh begins, the attention of every single person in the crowd fixed on him. “Most of which have been extravagant pieces made to stand tall in our city and glitter.”
Kaveh glances down at what must be some notes on the podium, pausing before he looks back up, shining in the bright lights of the stage.
“But in recent years, I must admit that my focus has shifted.”
Alhaitham leans forward, watching, hoping for something he can't quite admit. Not when the truth is that he’s never known how to say that he is hungry without fear that people will see the truth that he is starving.

Summary
When Alhaitham was much younger — intelligent enough to grasp the meaning of words, but too inexperienced to gain a deeper understanding of the content of what he was reading — he stumbled upon a paper on interpersonal relationships and sexual attraction. Hungry for knowledge, especially on a topic he felt himself to be existing at a certain distance from, he had breezed through all ninety pages of it. There was one line that has stuck with him inexplicably, as if it was meant to be stored in a safe space for later access:
It is a common occurrence for humans to find the scent of those pleasant whom they deem suitable as a sexual and/or romantic partner.
At the time, Alhaitham considers himself to be the exception. Years later, he arrives at the conclusion that his theory was completely off.

Summary

Summary
“Welcome home.” Alhaitham stands in the foyer, arms uncrossing to help Kaveh bring his mother’s bag onto the floor.
She looks to her son, then back at Alhaitham, then back to Kaveh again, brows knit in confusion.
“I, er… I suppose I should explain. Mother, this is my—” He pauses, hiding the way he falters behind an awkward cough.
“Alhaitham.”
Due to an unexpected visit from his mother, Kaveh asks Alhaitham to pretend to be more than his roommate. The week ends up being more than either of them bargained for.
