Summary
"I do not possess wickedness in me," Francesca declared.
"Do you have no desire beyond marriage and children?"
Was that how Michaela saw her? As a simple woman needing a child to give her purpose? A child and no joy.
or: Francesca finds a scandalous book in the Kilmartin library, and it does very little to help her understand intimacy with John.

Summary
“Does your mother know of your departure?”
Michaela sits a little straighter, not expecting the question. “Yes,” She answers, nodding once. “I sent a note to inform her before I left. I'll be sure to send another note to her when we arrive."
She adds after a moment, forcing a small smile. “I'm sure she will appreciate it.”
“Yes,” Lady Danbury agrees noncommittally, her hand securely on her tea cup. She brings it up for another sip, shorter this time, and continues, “And what of Lady Kilmartin? Was she made aware?”
The sting of hearing her name, even just her title, surprises her. It's a sting in her heart, but it is an unbearable weight deep in her chest. She almost cannot breathe with it there.
She swallows harshly, tapping her finger against her own cup once, twice. She nods, “Yes,” Michaela says, though it is a lie. “I informed Lady Kilmartin myself of my departure.”

Summary
The last letter Francesca received from Michaela had arrived six months ago. The first she had thrown away; after that, she could not imagine reading the ones that followed, not when she had not read the first.
But the last one had arrived on a cold, lonely day. Francesca had brought it to her room, sunk onto the bed, and held it in both hands. She had smelled it. Stared at the handwriting. Wondered whether it contained the answers she sought. Why Michaela had left. Where she was. Whom she was meeting and speaking to. But if she read it, she might have to reply, and she could not imagine replying without spilling herself in ink. I thought of you today and yesterday. I will think of you tomorrow. I wish I did not, but I cannot help it. Please, come back. I am waiting for you.

Summary
Michaela plucked a strawberry from the platter. It was deeply red and ripened to the point that was uncommon for fruit in early spring. She assessed it before she bit into it, turning it around in her fingers.
Francesca detected the white of her teeth as her mouth closed on the tip.
She took two bites. When she got to the heart of it, her lips enclosed around the remainder and she drew the last of it into her mouth slowly, sucking at its juices.
Then she looked up.
Francesca was still watching.
Their eyes met and held.

Summary
If only she had paid closer attention to the tale of Tantalus.
There had been no middle ground for Tantalus. He wanted it all, he got nothing. He wanted it all, he got worse than nothing. He got eternal tension — to yearn and never release. Torture in its biblical form.
There would be no middle ground for Michaela, either. She could not have part of Francesca while she still coveted the whole.
