There are moments when Eli can’t stand his skin, when he’s nauseated by its raised scars and even more appalled by its flawless surfaces. On good days, he likes to think of himself as a well-honed blade, forged in molten gold and swathed in unapproachable light. On the bad days, he imagines stripping the flesh from its marrow, pound by pound, his body is a violation of the divine order, and he is ashamed.
