    “What, in the last,” Todd glances at his watch, “two and a half hours? Nothing.”
    “Nothing,” Neil quietly repeats, and sighs. “I don’t believe that for a second.”
    “What could I possibly have been doing?”
    “I don’t know,” Neil shrugs. “I mean, even if you sat there the entire time, that’s still more than nothing.” He wriggles around until he props up on an elbow and leans to face Todd, squinting at him. “You can’t fool me, Anderson.” He presses a finger against his temple, and flops back onto his bed. “I know you’ve got a whole world up there.”

    Todd has revelations - some about love, but mostly about writing. They're the same thing, in the end.

    The last time they are seen in public together, it is on purpose. Papparazzis are told to be on the corner, cameras ready. A stylist picks what they’ll be wearing, makes their hair look unpurposefully disheveled, hands over designer sunglasses to mask their eyes. They’re given props, too, a lukewarm iced coffee and an Erewhon shopping bag. The script is sent to them the night before with notes. Don’t cry. Remember to be loud. Don’t rehearse too much. Try to look and sound as natural as possible.

    It’s all planned. The time they walk out of the store, Renjun walking steps ahead.

    Mark calling after him, “Let me explain!”

    Renjun whipping around to shout, “I don’t give a fuck what you have to say!”

    Mark looking around, pretending to realize they're being watched. Reaching for Renjun’s hand, Renjun pulling back.

    “We’re done,” Renjun will say, remembering the words on the page in his head. “It’s over.”
