Summary
Duncan “Dunk” is six-foot-something of bad decisions and body checks, currently one penalty away from getting benched for life and one concussion away from early retirement. He plays ice hockey like the rink personally insulted his mother and her emotionally complicated poodle.
Aerion Brightflame does not play anything. He performs.
National-level figure skater. Gold medal favorite. Known for routines so sharp they’ve been described as “surgical” and “mildly concerning.” Has been fined twice for “unsportsmanlike eye contact,” once for refusing to break character during a program (he maintained direct eye contact with a judge for twelve full seconds), and once for calling a scoring panel “artistically illiterate.”
There is an ongoing investigation into whether he did, in fact, mutter “little bitch-ass scoring” under his breath at a Grand Prix event. The footage is inconclusive. The lip-reading community says otherwise.
Anyway-they share a rink.

On top of that, we wouldn't be getting paid for any of—" Maekar began his rant, his face turning red as he spewed his frustrations at his older brother.
Aerion knew his father was right in some ways; he hadn't been giving them his best, and his current slump was affecting their image and his own mental health. But there was something in his heart that told him that this case could be the one to ignite the passion he needed to continue in this field. He looked at Arlan; the kid was glassy-eyed and looking at the floor. The poor boy made Aerion realize that he knew better than anyone else what it felt like to be caged with nowhere else to turn, to be kicked down so badly that he'd grasp at anything for help.
"I'll do it. I'll defend Duncan Pennytree." Aerion cut off his father mid-rant. "And I'll fucking win."

As their bodies pressed flush together, Dunk caught sight of the bandage wrapped snugly around Aerion’s inner thigh, white and pristine like a garter on a wedding day. His thumb pressed against the fabric, just enough to feel the tenderness of the wound beneath.
Or: Aerion has violent dreams that leave him shaking and unstable. As a member of the Kingsguard, Dunk has to deal with the aftermath.
