Summary
Simon has a dead boy's notebook in his pocket and a live boy's attention on his back. He knows things Jack Merridew needs, and Jack Merridew knows he knows them, and that is enough for both of them.
It is not enough for Simon. Nothing is. But he stays. This is not a story about a boy who didn't know better.
"The Useful Boy" is an explicit, non-consensual Lord of the Flies reimagining from Simon's POV. No redemption.
(BTW I'm just experimenting. Tags reflect the work as a whole. Chapters 1-3 are up; content described in tags will appear across the full fic).

Summary
One of Jack Merridew's most closely guarded secrets is his complicated friendship with Simon Cambourne.
When he stumbles upon Simon's diary, he's afraid of what others might see if they read it.
But there's no one more afraid of what's written in the diary than Jack himself.
Because the diary is proof of everything- his sins, his complicated feelings for Simon, and the vulnerability that he's fought so hard to conceal from everyone else.

Summary
Simon’s diary consisted almost entirely of writings about Jack and about Jack alone.
Roughly seven parts to three, one might say.
Yet for the longest time the entries consisted of little more than Simon repeatedly calling Jack insufferable in a dozen different shades of annoyance... until the final few pages.
