Summary
Some say a curse leaves a mark on the soul. That the fraction of the population who experience it are forever changed.
This is true. Those educated in the matter know that in fact, however, a curse goes even further than this. It splits the soul in two. When a curse manifests on a boy's tenth birthday, their soul is made physical in the form of a daemon: a being that takes the physical appearance of an animal. They are a companion for life.
A child's daemon can typically change between forms at will. The settling of a daemon into one permanent form marks the shift into adulthood, and is the end goal of all students of St Churnley's School for Cursed Boys - total mastery of their curse, and of the sacred bond between them and their daemon.
Four cursed boys and their daemons will begin this journey together.

After discovering an injured creature out in the Plagueround, Hexmaster Ranjit Singh brings it inside to nurse it back to health. A night of visitors and unexpected introspection ensues.

Summary
Grandpa Bobbie and his daemon Alba, who died before Robert was born, settled as a bobcat. Not the biggest daemon, but big enough one’d have to start considering the size of spaces when it came to their daemon. Dad and his daemon Solas settled as doberman. To a young kid, this was setting a pattern of bigger and bigger forms as the Robertson legacy continued.
Robert and Valda rarely ever went small. They did cheetah, tiger, lion, crocodile. All sorts of breeds of huge dogs. Wolves. Predators and hunters, animals befitting a hero who would protect people and hunt down villains.

For a moment, they just watched the beings scrabbling over each other, until, as one, their stretched blank faces swung towards the distant shadow towering over them and a strained howl burst from a hundred twisted necks.
