    He figures Ilya would be pretty surprised if he showed up to his house out of the blue. Surprised enough to be put off, probably. Shane is way too bad of a liar to think of any plausible excuse. If this is really happening, if Shane is actually by some miracle getting another shot at this, then he’s going to have to play this smart. His impatience to see Ilya again will have to be tempered. He’s not sure how time travel works, but he has the sneaking suspicion that one wrong move could unravel everything.

    Ilya is alive.

    Just the thought of it is enough to make Shane crack his first smile in a year.

    Yuna’s eyes flitted between the two men, back and forth, until they rested on Ilya’s. His heart was racing but he was determined to make Shane proud in that moment. “And you love my son?”

    “More than anything,” Ilya replied honestly, feeling Shane tangle their fingers together between them. “I did not mean for you to see that.”

    “I know, I think we all wish that, Rozanov,” Yuna said with a wry smile.

    The Russian pet name set a firework off inside Shane's mind as he heard it cooed from behind him. The intonation was just as he remembered, but the voice was much deeper.

    He turned and felt himself short circuit. It took every ounce of willpower to not let his jaw drop cartoonishly to the floor. Shane would recognize his individual features anywhere, even after 5 years. But it was as if someone had snapped their fingers and the smug, silly Russian boy who had been attached to Shane's hip for 3 summers was transformed into some sort of fucking Adonis right before his eyes.

    “Ilya-” was all Shane managed before strong arms were wrapped around his waist and lifting him off the ground in a greeting all too familiar from years ago.

    “How did you know that he would turn?” Shane asks after a pause.

    “His family is here. He would not want his parents to see him crash.“ Ilya answers simply, like that is an entirely sound strategy. Shane blinks for a few moments, taking the words in.

    “Your dad is here too.”

    Ilya smiles at that, and it’s not nice. It’s a mean sort of expression, joyless. Like he’s privy to some odd inside joke only he understands. He walks away after that without replying.

    Shane Hollander is a Mercedes driver, and Ilya Rozanov drives a Red Bull. They’re destined to be rivals. If only Shane could somehow shake off the strange pull he feels between them.
