"So you don't know." It comes out even but his accent is thicker, voice deeper like when he's trying not to get emotional.
"Know what?" he whispers back.
Ilya chooses his words carefully, hesitantly. He looks at Shane and continues, "Things are not getting better, Shane."
It could mean a million different things.
"I'm sorry, sweetheart," Ilya says softly.
It's the voice he would use to approach kids who fell on the ice, at camp. To baby and comfort them at first, but then the truth: that it's all a part of the game. You fall, get hurt, but you get back up. The last one is the most important, what matters.
"Ilya, please." Shane breathes. He's still clutching the pillow to his chest, his chin resting on one end, staring off into the dark room.
"They've projected a week. Maybe less." Ilya reaches out, brings his hand to Shane's jaw, and tips up so their gazes meet.
"A week for what?" He pushes.
He knows the answer, is terrified of it, but he needs to hear it.
Ilya's eyes are glassy and his chin wobbles when he next speaks. His eyes are so sad, and he looks so defeated.
"For us. To exist. Before we run out of oxygen."

"Look, I wasn't sure how to bring this up," Shane started, putting his voice into a different register, the register he uses when he knows he's about to get what he wants, all breathy and a little whiny. A dirty little trick. "But I don't think I have the money to pay you this week, but you know I'm good for it."
"You're good for it?" Ilya asked, and he's fallen into his role seamlessly. In another life he would have been a thespian, he thought. "I don't think this will work for me," he said, taking a menacing step towards Shane who is doing all he can to keep a giddy little smile off his lips. Not the best scene partner, admittedly. But he's got the spirit.
"No?" he quivered out.
"No. I don't think so." Ilya took another bite of his popsicle and tried not to break character by wincing at the brain freeze. "I have bills to pay, you know. And I spend extra time making your yard look perfect," Ilya gestured over his shoulder with the popsicle stick at the wobbly, imperfect mower lines in the grass. "and now I might not get paid? No. That won't work for me."
Shane's eyes widened under his sunglasses, lips cherry red, bitten and juice-stained. "Could we come to some kind of arrangement?"

Summary
Shane's breath catches on a sob, and he muffles the sound with his hand. Everything feels like too much. He’s naked, and he can feel entirely too much on his body, inside his body, and he hates how it's starting to feel gross. His head is pounding, and he can't even focus on placating his mind when his lungs are also screaming in his throat for breath.
Ilya hears, and his hands reach out to hold Shane, tension lying in every part of his body. “Shane—”
“Don't touch me,” Shane snaps, more desperation than yelling as he rips his arm out of Ilyas's grasp. His tears have nowhere to go now, and they finally spill over, hot and humiliating, down his cheeks.
Ilya freezes in place, hand hovering mid-air. A myriad of emotions flicker across his face: confusion, hurt, fear. Ilya takes an unconscious step back like someone shoved him. His body curls in on itself, trying to make himself appear smaller.
He looks... terrified. Like, Shane just called him a monster, and he believes it.
OR: inspired by the fight in the long game when ilya had told shane he could have sex with other men because he did not believe in cheating.
