“I really like you. I know our past is kind of loaded, and we live in different states or whatever, but I want to keep hanging out with you. As more than friends. Even for just this summer,” Sterling finally says.
April had been expecting it, of course. She thinks another time, she would have said no. Now, though, when she looks at Sterling, she remembers how her face looked under dim lights and with pink cheeks. April also remembers how free she had felt, and how she always feels good around Sterling. She feels like herself, which is something she can’t say about very many other people.
And it’ll be for just the summer. She can do just the summer, is enthusiastic to do just the summer.
“I’d like that,” April says simply.
“Yeah?”
April doesn’t say anything in response, only closes the distance between them.

April’s suddenly a lot closer than she remembered. She could trace the curve of her nose without having to move more than a few inches.
