“Will I see you around, Madeline?” Wally calls after her.
“I don’t know, maybe?” She whirls back around to stop the door from fully closing. “It’s actually Madison, if you care.” She doesn’t know why he would, but she wants him to know her correct full name. For some reason.
He grins, as if they’re both in on a joke. “Right, Madison. And I’m Jeff, short for Jefferson.”
She squints. “Huh?”
Wally backpedals, flustered. “Sorry, I thought you were joking around, ‘cause Madison is like, a last name.”
This is really throwing her for one final loop. “Well… it’s my first name.”
“Oh. Rad. Respect. Never heard of that before.”

Summary
Wally Clark sucked.
At least that's what anyone not on the football or cheer teams would say. Plenty of people were duped by the hope "hometown hero" Wally Clark would acknowledge them, offer a smile or a high five, but there were those who avoided his direct line of sight. He and his pack of neanderthals were terrors.
By 2023, he's a much kinder person, but forty years ago, Wally lived a different life.

Seven years later, due to a string of murders in Horseshoe Bay that Nancy is sent by the FBI to investigate, she is forced to reckon with the choice she made, not knowing if her presence back home will trigger the Dybbuk to resurface once again.

Nancy could acknowledge it was selfish of her to drop this on him right before she planned to leave him, but she needed him to know how she felt before losing the opportunity to tell him forever. She was prepared to double down.
“Well, I do.” Nancy halfheartedly lifted her arms, not sure what to do with them. “Love you.”
It was the first time she’d ever told a man she loved them, and it suddenly struck her that it might be the last.
