trinity has, frustratingly, been kind of a revelation for victoria: she's known for a long time now that she's queer, that gender and sexuality are too fluid and interesting and unimportant for her to limit herself. but she'd always been so much younger than her peers in school and so different from those her age that exploring that — experiencing it — for herself, in her own life, had always been beyond her grasp. but now there's trinity, with her stupid carabiner and her cargo pants and brush of eyeliner, the thrifted t-shirts she likes to cut into crops just above her hips. it's a little intoxicating, the way she refuses to confine herself: she doesn't shave and she prefers boxers; she likes mascara and, as she'd told victoria once a little drunk after she'd schooled both her and dennis in pool, loves her boobs. she has delicate tattoos and musky cologne.
it's intoxicating, most of the time, to watch this person who is so resistant to let people in — so scared — be exactly who she is.

“You need me to explain weighted blankets to you?” He asked dubiously, wrapping an arm around her, pulling her closer. Samira revelled in the feeling of his strong arms pressing her against his body. “It’s a blanket with beads in it so it’s heavy?”

Samira knew that sleep was a precarious proposition for Jack. He required an extensive combination of psychotropic medications and vitamins, a regimen of stretching, of practiced breathing, and a bed made tight enough to double as a straight jacket—what Jack had explained as "sleep hygiene"—to override the damage to his amygdala and manage even a few hours of contiguous sleep. By his own admission, deviation from this carefully crafted routine was a recipe for insomnia.
So, as Samira pulled the covers down from the palatial bed to the floor in an effort to make the bed to Jack's precise specifications, the change in texture of the flat and fitted sheets as well as the pillowcases, silky instead of their usual worn flannel, took her by surprise.

Whitaker flinched at that, immediately rising to his feet as well on the opposite end of the couch. “I didn’t do anything!”
“I didn’t say you did anything!” Santos all but yelled with her hands in the air.
“You looked like you were going to!” Whitaker responded, reciprocating the energy she was giving in his completely shocked and startled tone.
“I always look like I have something to say!” Santos snapped, fingers digging into the hoodie that was very clearly his.

Santos has taken it upon herself to do the lord's work: teach Whitaker how to be a cultured human being.Cue an adobo cooking run, heated Mario Kart, impromptu movies and accidental dozing off. Together, in between all the sibling banter and domestic room-mate hood they have found themselves in.

It's supposedly perfect. She gets the Jack Abbot without the trauma and PTSD and grief. She gets the version of him that's soft and hot and doesn't expect her to placate him. They're just friends with benefits, and that very thought makes Samira want to throw up.
Because once again, Samira wants. She wants and wants and wants until the only thing left in her soul is the bitter taste of sorrow about what could have been, what should have been.
