Summary
Buck has a bad habit of disappearing when he thinks he’s “too much.”
On the days loneliness settles into his bones, he drives until he finds the loneliest tree he can, sits beneath its branches, and keeps it company.
Eddie finds him one day.
Buck tells him about reincarnated souls, lonely trees, and how one day he hopes to come back as a tree that gets to spend a century resting in the sun.
Eddie’s response?
Buy the tree a boyfriend.
OR
The one where two trees accidentally become the greatest queer icons in Los Angeles, the 118 invents an elderly soulmate couple that never existed, and Buck and Eddie finally find their way home.

Summary
Buck pointed toward the bay doors, “It’s literally raining right now.”
The room went silent.
Not the normal kind of silence.
The oh no, Buck has had a thought kind.
Athena slowly lowered her drink. Hen stopped chewing. Chimney looked like he was trying not to laugh. Bobby looked tired in advance.
Eddie blinked, “…What?”
Buck gestured wildly toward the storm raging outside, “You said you wanted a rain kiss.”

Summary
Years before joining the 118, Buck’s travels take him to El Paso, where he meets Christopher. When Eddie comes back from Afghanistan and Shannon leaves, Buck ends up staying. As bills pile up, the best move is for them to get married, just for convenience, they’ll divorce when Eddie comes back from his re-enlistment.
Then Eddie gets injured and it’s just easier to stay married for a little longer, while Buck gets started at the 118. However, Buck doesn’t mention his ‘husband’ and kid, not feeling like they’re his to keep. When Eddie gets the offer from Bobby, they decide to lie and pretend they don’t know each other, so they can work together.
The whole lie gets out of hand as feelings start to become real, until it all comes to a head in the aftermath of the fire engine explosion.
AKA: Secret marriage of convenience buddie slow burn AU, where Buck and Eddie have been married for years so Buck could adopt Chris and no one at the 118 knows.

Summary
“He’s not,” Christopher interrupted after he swallowed, his eyebrows furrowed, “that’s not- no. Bucks not my uncle.”
His abuela waved a dismissive hand, “Oh, of course not, I know that. Isn’t that a thing you young ones do? Refer to your parents' close friends as aunts or uncles?”
And here’s the thing, yes. He refers to Hen and Karen as his aunties. He’s never blinked at that. He routinely tells people that he and Denny are basically cousins.
Sure, he even calls Maddie and Chim his aunt and uncle without a second thought, but that’s because - well, that’s because..
“He’s not my uncle,” Christopher repeated, “He’s my other dad.”
••
OR Five times Christopher Diaz sets the record straight on who Buck is to him and the one time he makes sure Buck knows it too.

Summary
Missing Chris is less of an emotion these days and more of a physical entity. He’s sure everyone can see that he’s slowly hollowing himself out, that he can’t do much of anything else.
But when Jee laughs at him trying to get his tongue to touch his nose, and Mara loops one of her arms through his to keep him from tossing the rest of his cup in the garbage, Eddie feels solid again.
Maybe he likes yellow birthday cake ice cream after all.
(or, gerrard messes with the team's schedules and eddie 'i just drove my son to flee the state' diaz is the only option to watch mara and jee-yun after school on tuesdays, which, shouldn't be a problem at all, right?)
