Summary
Ogata had been willing to die because he was unable to bring himself to kill Vasily. The moment he accepted that reality, his pride as an expert sniper had been tarnished. Vasily knew this because he was in the exact same position. Only, he wasn’t prepared to end it all like Ogata. In fact, he fought like hell to survive their encounter.
Why did he even bother fighting? He didn’t exactly have much to live for, but... he had something. What did Ogata have? Vasily didn’t know him well enough to say, but his actions suggested that the answer to that question was bleak. Did Ogata truly have nothing outside of being a sniper?
Did he have nothing outside of that wildcat persona?

They’d be even more unkind to an outsider: pale but not the right kind of pale, eyes that – even closed – taper off into a slimmer point without a fold in the eyelid.
Vasily comes to the sudden realization that he would like to paint them.
