This, he tells himself, is the fruit of several hundred years of magnificent labour. Physical and emotional. Neither? Both. You have been through many, many trials and tribulations, Lestat. But weren’t they worth every second? This is what you get when you drag yourself up and out of the rubble, and her with you: you get to lay with her as equals again.

It shouldn’t shock him when he steps onto the bus to see the girl from outside the show on Gabrielle’s lap on one of the pull-out couches, but it does. All the signs were there, and he’s not, though many would beg to disagree, stupid; something in him was, against all odds, still hoping this would be a forgettable encounter. Painful, yes, but forgettable. Another to add to the tally, nothing more.
The girl looks up at him, and her eyes widen like she’s been caught. Because she has been caught, he tells himself. Is this not strange to her? She still has his autograph on her arm in Sharpie. She told him she was going to get it tattooed.

And although tales from those lucky fans that were in attendance paint the San Francisco show as one for the ages, very few clips of it are currently in circulation— believe us, we’ve tried. These days, The Vampire Lestat exists as a kind of time capsule fever dream, both for those fortunate enough to have witnessed them in their prime and for those of us looking back enviously, wishing that we did. Lestat is an enigma, and tons of us have driven ourselves crazy trying to figure out what the hell he and the band were all about.
Now, forty years on from San Francisco, we’ve managed to round up a select few The Vampire Lestat insiders and enthusiasts alike to give us their take on what made that show, the band as a whole, and Lestat himself, so memorable.
