As she ushered him inside, Tommy couldn't help but notice the signs of a life gone awry. Cigarette butts littered the floor, and empty alcohol bottles stood as silent witnesses to her struggles. The living room, once a place of warmth and laughter, now seemed cold and desolate.
Tommy's heart sank further when he saw a large bruise on his mother's neck, unmistakably in the shape of a handprint. His worry deepened, and he knew he couldn't ignore the signs any longer.

Instead, he blinks, then snaps his head away from his family to pull the collar of his shirt up, dissolving into a coughing fit.
"It's hard to breathe," he admits hoarsely once he's caught his breath, a hand to his neck and the other clutching his chest. It's like he's collapsing inside of himself, the strange feeling of his entire being contorting.
