Sequel to 'The Tunnel Rat'.
It had been months since 'the sewer incident'. He didn't like to talk about it. Nobody did. And nobody made a big deal anymore when someone other than Roy got volunteered for a rescue in a tight space.
"Cap," Roy spoke up before he could talk himself out of it. "I can go in." His hands clenched and unclenched.
Cap didn't even blink. "No, Roy, you can't."
"Cap-"
"We make rules for reasons." Cap's voice was flat and firm. "And there's a damn good reason for 'Desoto doesn't do tunnels'."

Summary
Roy never hesitated on water rescues.
He dove in faster while Johnny was still making peace with the idea of getting wet. He swam farther, smoother, with less splashing and less visible effort than anyone Johnny had ever worked with. He stayed under longer than he should have, came up exactly where he needed to be, and somehow always seemed to know where the current would take him.
Johnny wasn’t sure where the stamina came from. Or the breath control. Or the fact that Roy could come out of the ocean soaked to the skin, hair plastered to his forehead, and look more relaxed than he did sitting at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee.
But Roy was a natural.
More graceful in the water than he was on land.

"Harper. Jess Harper," Slim answered before Jess could.
Coker nodded once and looked back at the horse currently standing soft under Jess's hand. "Well, Harper's either part horse or-"
"He was raised by a herd of horses. Wild as can be." Slim spun a yarn while Jess snickered and continued to get a feel for each horse. "My pa rescued him, trained him to be human again… sort of. Close as we could get, at least."

Slim's been watching Jess ever since that night with the foaling. He's been noticing things with a new understanding and this cattle drive is where it might all come out in the open.

The next, he was in the Rover and halfway across town, heart hammering in his ribs for no good reason at all, spare key to the DeSoto house dangling from his keyring.

You know how old people always say stuff like "There weren't so many autistic people back in my day" and you know it's bullshit because they just weren't diagnosed, they just had quirks that everyone accepted? yeah... that.
So this is a self-indulgent sandbox au I'm going to write and play in.... in which Roy Desoto is one of those "not autistic" but totally actually autistic people that they talk about. And Johnny lives in his back pocket, so he totally notices and he loves every little new thing he learns about Roy because obviously he loves Roy and just hasn't realized or said it yet.
