    Summary

When Rem kills L, she does not expect to survive. Which is to say, she does not expect to find herself back at the start of the day she killed him. When L dies in Light's arms, he doesn't expect to find himself back at the start of that same day, either.

*He considered begging Light for what he wanted. For him to tell the truth; for him to act like the murderer he was for just a minute, or as long as it took L to fade away, and look at him with his true eyes. But it felt wrong, and beneath him, and maybe it just wasn’t meant to happen, not between them and not ever.
*"I am wary of the prospect of it falling in the hands of a person who would do much more stupid and much less interesting things with it than you. You’re really one in a million, Light, and I am not interested in playing this game with anyone else."

    Summary

Dead. Dead, dead, dead. A splayed out corpse, ugly in its awkward angles and unnatural paleness. Light chews on his lips, lets the corners of his mouth twitch into a small smile as he pictures it. L is bloody and hacked apart. L is splattered on the ground. L is limp with vacant eyes and an open, bleeding mouth that can’t accuse anyone of anything.

Light doubts even Kira wants L dead as much as he does. He doesn’t even know what L looks like, so he doesn’t get to fantasize about it properly. How sad.

But Light does, and Light can, and Light does.

He is so controlled, and he is so in control of his mind, and he is thinking about exactly what he wants to think about.

L’s eyes are black holes. Light cannot escape them.

*If Light isn’t careful, if he gets too close, he’ll fall into those black-hole eyes. Light cannot escape a black hole, after all. Nothing can.
*“I’m not Kira,” he spits down at him. “Please be,” says L, eyes wide and shining, “please be him. You’re doing so good. I want more.”

    Summary

“Satisfied?” Light grumbles into the phone, shutting his laptop with a soft click, and padding his way over to his bathroom. As he stands, L’s gentle voice crackles over the speaker.

    “No, never.”

“Predictable,” he sneers, running his toothbrush under the tap water, “So, then, what would keep you satisfied? If anything.”

There’s shuffling on L’s end, before he says, fluid, like a paintbrush over wood, all too easy, like it’s the easiest thing in the world, “You.”

The Kira case wanes in 2004, and eventually goes cold. L departs from Japan, and five years go by. Until, one night in 2009, L tells Light that the Kira case is being reopened, and L wants to help acquit him before he is inevitably caught. But, like always, there is a catch that comes with L's favour, and now Light is stuck playing teacher in a house full of genius orphans while mending the rift that had blossomed between himself and L.

*His forehead presses into L’s chest through his shirt, and feels his heartbeat. He counts in his head. It’s also sixty. Their heartbeats are the same. They share the same fate, like L had said in that dream.
*He has read this poem, he has thought about this poem as he lathered shampoo in his hair, he has thought about this poem as he brushed his teeth, he has thought about this poem as he lay awake in bed, scornful, mournful, and irrevocably in love with the man in the driver’s seat.
*Light has brown eyes, Mello has to remind himself, Light has yellow-brown eyes. His eyes are not red. It’s a trick of the sun. His eyes are brown. “Good job,” Light says, and cannot help the curl of his lips into a wide grin. His teeth are normal. His teeth are normal. His teeth are not sharp. His eyes are not red.
*He wishes, with all of his heart, that he and Light did not have to meet like this, and did not have to part like this. He likes to think that in some other life, they could have been something.
*L does not want to die any more. He does not want to lose Light. If he dies, Light will not follow. The bells do not toll for the two of them.

    Summary

“Fine," Light says. "I suppose I have a deadline, too?”

Ryuk’s feathers flutter. “Sure do! And it’s later than it was supposed to be, thanks to me. You’re welcome, by the way.”

Light knows better than to thank Ryuk. “When is the deadline?”

“It was supposed to be now, actually. But I made a little gamble of my own, and now you’ve got until the end of the week.”

“Ryuk,” Light says. “It is Wednesday night.”
