Jack knows things, maybe, but he knows the wrong things. He knows the hard peaks and sloping valleys of another man, so he knows something — but maybe he isn’t supposed to know. Maybe he isn’t supposed to close his eyes and feel the weight of Ennis’s body against his, whose skin was dry and cracked from working in the hot sun, and whose bones made sharp edges at his hips, knees and face.
Jack knows something. He catches a glimpse at Ennis, tries to see in Ennis’s eyes if he knows too.
